This is kind of nifty. Mozilla is running a campaign to buy a full-page ad in the NYT for the release of Firefox 1.0. You can get your name listed in it by donating to the ad fund. It's only $10 for students, so I donated.

Help Firefox and be famous!

ugh, NYT is not as good a paper as it's reputation would indicate. Just look at the number of wishb's (what it should have beens, aka we farked up/corrections) on any given day.
Should have gone for Time or USA Today or FHM or something good. Still, it is an interesting way to get the word out.

Whether NYT is a good paper or not is kind of beside the point. It's still one of the most famous papers in the world, possibly with the largest readership.

Yeah, USA Today totally beats the New York Times.

For American papers,

1. USA Today, 2,635,412
2. The Wall Street Journal, 2,101,017
3. New York Times, 1,677,003
4. Los Angeles Times, 1,392,672
5. The Washington Post, 1,025,579
6. Chicago Tribune, 1,002,398
7. New York Daily News, 802,103
[8.] Denver Post/Rocky Mountain News,783,274
9. Philadelphia Inquirer, 769,257
10. The Dallas Morning News, 755,912

Almost a million more readers in USA Today than the Times, so any perceptions of quality notwithstanding, you get more readers. You get more travelers. You get people not only across the USA but also across the globe.

So, my contention is if FireFox is trying to get the word out about its product, USA Today seems a far more attractive target because of circulation and range.

Point well taken.

Let me paraphrase:
The 1337 readers of the NYT don't need to know, since they are already using IE alternatives.
The n00b readers of USAToday would be a better target !

Ok, fine, USA Today has more readers. But it's a moot point since the campaign has already begun.

They do. In fact, that's how I paid since I'm not old enough to have a credit card.

Way to not look before you type

They've gotten almost 2,500 donations already! That's pretty impressive.
