Been playing the stupid game since I first came across computers. I guess that'd be about 20 years. Anyway, just curious if anyone else has played it too.

Couple years ago I found a new version called NetHack. They've ported it to almost everything. Right now I telnet into an online version. It's still only single player, but it's fun fighting and killing other peoples' ghosts on the bones levels.

For anyone who hasn't played it: www.nethack.org

Quite literally, it's an ASCII based Diablo, of course, Hack/Rogue came out probably 30 years before Diablo.

"Yes, I eat slime molds!"

(from a t-shirt I made about ten years ago for a conference)

About half there got it.

Two years ago I did the same. Less than 10% got it. About half the others were disgusted.

Have you gotten beyond level 100 yet?

Nope. Apparently there was a bug where the real Amulet of Yendor would never generate. So for about 7 years no one knew that you couldn't beat the game.

They've fixed it since. In the game that I telnet to, there's a bones level where someone managed to summon a Demon Prince, but then died. If you ever get to that level, the Demon Prince teleports to you and kills you in like 2 hits. There's about 20 ghosts on the level. Haha.

www.thenethacksite.com

This is the one I play at. They have a top scores list there. You can see how often people beat the game. But I think the last time someone beat it was in 2002. Pretty damn hard.

Edit: Top 10 isn't working for some reason.

Played it a little. Found it boring and rather dull.
