The commemorative coin, intended to honour Canada's war veterans, will be engraved with a blazing red poppy

No pix yet:

"On Thursday, October 21, 2004, at 2:45 p.m. EST, the Royal Canadian Mint will make history when it unveils its newest circulation coin – a world's first coin that pays homage to Canada's war veterans. The coin will be unveiled at a special event at the Minto Armory in Winnipeg with over 1000 guests from around the world in attendance.

This extraordinary coin is an expression of our appreciation and respect for the sacrifice and duty of Canada's soldiers – fallen, returned, retired and active. Inspired by the service of these heroes, the coin proudly belongs to all Canadians. The Mint is proud to bring this wonderful coin to Canada and the world.
"

It'd be cool if this makes it into general circulation in large numbers. I hope it's not somewhat limited and thus just snatched up by the collectors.

interesting to say the least
I'm in canada so I could get one
couldn't really host a pic though as I don't have formal web hosting space and just a laptop so the pic would be down alot and I don't even have the bandwidth on my adsl(upstream of course)to host it for one user on a 56 k modem.

I suppose it keeps the currency sort of interesting. I mean, it beats using the same quarters from 1982.

are you serious? that's the 'merican mint .. lol .. and the special state quarters

at first i was like ... poppy? that's not very manly .. legion's poppy ... makes sense

the canadian mint kicks ass ... i was watching on the discovery channel a year or so back ... that showed their mint making a 99.95 or something pure gold coin. far higher than any other country and higher than required by law or whatever. and on top of that .. they strike a HOLOGRAM/HOLOFOIL maple leaf ... geez .. innovative ... the us mint needs to get serious ... lol

While we are speaking of Canuck cash the Loonie cracked the 80 cent (US) barrier again today.

Good time for Canadians to spend some in the US. (read: good time to make your large purchases south of the border, like computers or the like.

Look up a few messages. You quoted exactly what I quoted.

What I was looking for in the later message were the other non-red quarters they keep releasing all the time, in response to your other message.

Well, the coin is a single geometric maple leaf with a single red poppy in the middle of it. I saw it in the web stream, but no actual jpg yet.

I like the other coin above better, with the multiple red maple leaves.

Heh. They provided a pseudo schedule, so I just checked it a couple of times to see if they were unveiling it.

Anyways, in the end it's pretty disappointing.

No? The news article linked to the Canadian Mint site, which said to go to the photo archives for pics... Of course, I've not seen the coin, but I had to assume that the Mint had the right info.

I guess the "2004 Coulorized 25-Cent Coin" was some other issue?

Ya I can't find it there either.

Anywho, about the paint pealing. This sort of crap always goes on when they come out with something new. When the toonie came out they said the middle would pop out easily, they even had a kid on the news that popped it out and got his finger stuck in it. I have never seen one with the middle missing.

Yeah, that's the one in the pic I linked. It's a Canada Day coin, not in general circulation. Or at least it's not common because I've never seen it. Too bad too, since it's pretty nice.

It was just on TV. Apparently this is the ONLY general circulation coloured coin in the world.

Why can't the US can't even get around to colouring its bills

Heheh. Is that a slight on Canada or in reality a slight on the US? And if you haven't already figured it out, this coin is in rememberance of the 117000 Canadians who died in the war.

Because we don't want to? It's not that important? It's superficial?

BTW we would never colour anything.

We may however add color to our bills.

Neither, the SWF was being silly, so I decided to be equally silly.

Indeed.
