I read this blurb on the "register" about 'chavs' but the links were so slow to work I had to ask. Is it the equvalent of a "tool" here iin the states ?

Hey guys, been living in London for the past two months...basically a Chav is equivalent to what some in the states would consider a "wigger" or someone who is just (insert race here)-trash. They have a shaved head, they speak in slang, they wear the swishy basketball pants and gym shoes (trainners). CHAV stands for Council House Adult Vermin...so in American English ... "the Animals" living in the public housing projects...Going to bring some cool slangs back to the states with me...maybe they'll catch on like all the Americanisms have here.

Amazing that good old class warfare is alive and well in Europe. I think the closest word we have here in the states is trailer park trash. Its interesting to note though, that in the states derogatory terms are usually based on color - while in the UK its based on class. Perhaps because the in the UK color is not identified with class.

There are plenty of race-based derogatory terms in England, although I would guess that there are more for people of Indian background than African.

Race-based terms in the US sort of serve double duty since many people identify certain races with certain classes.

As with most things in life, it isn't that clear-cut. We're not exactly experiencing class warfare, the word "chav" isn't new, and isn't used that much at all in the UK. To most people chavs are gangs of teenage boys wearing identikit nylon tracksuits and caps. However, I seem to constantly hear "trailer-trash" from American tv/music/media. From the time I spent in America it seemed to me the gap between rich and poor was far bigger.
