So I'm a server here in South Florida, and I'm waiting on these dudes from another land, seems to me to be Netherlands or something.

Through dinner, I start chattin' with them, and find out why they're here in the states. They say they're here for a Finnish (Finish?) TV station or something. I get to asking about what they use software-wise, and whether or not they use Macs. The 'video guy' in the group says he does, but that the other two use Linux, and he rolls his eyes, as they all kinda chuckle.

The other guy, a bit older, asks of me 'do you know Linux?'

'I do.'

'What do you know about it?'

'It's cheeap, it's powerful, it's open.'

'Very good' he says. 'Do you know who the inventor is?'

'Linus Torborg, Torbold, somethin like that. Close enough, right?' I say jokingly.

He hands me his credit card, and says 'Torvalds', as he points to the same name on the card.

'I'm his dad' he says.

'Ooh, cool' - me.

As I run off to charge his card, I run around my restaurant to try and find a geeky-co-worker to share my excitement with. No luck.

anyhow, we chat a bit more, and I told the guys to come back in tomorrow for some drinks or somethin, I said I'd buy them a round.

In the end, the only guy that thought it was actually cool was my dad, a Network guru for 20 years or so.

sooo, i thought it was kinda cool.. cooler if it was Linus himself? yes. cooler more if it were Steve Jobs? definitely. How about Aria? no doubt.

that's my little story.

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Linux users are fellow members of ze résistance, so they're okay by me.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

yea, he mentioned how his son has kept quite a bit of money out of Bill's grip.
I think I find amazing people's family members at least half-amazing.

Other than that, it is a nifty story. What kind of guy is he? Friendly? Geeky? ...

Ahaha, I thought the same thing. You know it's a geek board when the idea of "server" as a waiter doesn't even cross our minds.

hhaa, whoops. "I'm not a server I just wait a lot" - sung to the tune of Big Pun's "I'm not a Player I just **** a lot"

about bringin' a camera, I try really hard not to do that at work. Shaquille O'Neal was here the other night and I refrained. My job seems a tad more dignified that way. maybe a camera phone pic would be in order.

and yea, he seemed nice enough. He had a margarita (with salt), then with his meal (Seabass I seem to recall) he had a glass of Santa Margherita pinot grigio.

Cool!
How'd they tip? Those Euros can forget to do so sometimes.

Did you save a copy of the credit card, you know, for a souvenir?

ha, yea. generally speaking, Europeans seem to not know (or care) that American waiters make on average about $2-4/hr. That said, Mr. Torvalds tipped a full 20 percent. He's a good guy.

no saving of credit card receipts, tyvm.

I hate to belittle your experience, but isn't that that meeting the father of any famous person, who, since he is JUST the father, hasn't done anything himself except spawn someone who DID do something? (Does that even make sense?)

You know, like meeting Linus Torvalds' neighbor. Or Linus' dog.

And I love the "server" joke!

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).
