The goofup:
http://www.greenamp.com/images/simpsongoofup.mpg

She blames the band:
http://www.greenamp.com/images/Ashlee.avi

I know some might raise the point that live shows like SNL almost always want a backup tract played, but as you can see from the vid she obviously had no plans to sing the song live. Had she any real talent, and actually COULD sing live, she would have instinctively just started singing.

All I can say is LMAO, and hopefully good riddance.

Hmmm...first link is "not found" and the other one didn't give me a good file. Is SNL's legal team that fast?

Edit: thanks for altering the link. It now works.

Like so many people out there who have singles out and stuff and can't really sing. It's all computer modified and so on. I'm amazed at how many new bands/singers pop up every single day ... and most of them can't even sing.

Good riddance.

yay yay..... I first heard it from Spymac forum...

Ashlee Simpson / Lucky Magazine interview:

LM: What are your takes on lip-synching?

AS: I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going out to let my real talent show, not to just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me.
Since I'm on the West Coast, NBC cut out the "tape-playing" part when I tuned in. Thanks for the Internet, I am able to watch before it's even on my TV. Her move was silly as well.

It should be playing "Shadow" instead of "Pieces of Me"... anyway... may be one of the SNL skit..

Britney Spears got caught out lip syncing on Much Music a year or two ago, it was pretty damn obvious.

At least the band had the sense to keep playing till they cut to commercial... wonder what the audience had to say?

Yes, the professional thing to do.

Though, when watching it I couldn't help but feel that they kept playing to distance themselves from their embaressed singer. As if they were saying "Hey, she's the one that performs from a tape, not us..."

Yeah.. that sucks that someone on SNL, was lip syncing...

Now I think about it I can't remember the last person I saw LS when they were on SNL.

I bet it was done on purpose. (someone did it to her on purpose that is)

You can always tell when someone is doing it anyhow. At least you can when you are there.

The TV usually only gets the "good" shots.

This is exactly what I thought.

You can kind of tell by them talking to each other and the amused expressions on their faces in the moments before they went to commercial.

Huh..I actually saw this last night while it was happening, and when I heard her voice playing and she wasn't singing, I thought it was supposed to be like when they have background singers, except they used her voice for it. But, upon reviewing the tape, definitely lip-syncing operation.

Course she has no talent. She doesn't have to be a really gifted singer. Same as she isn't a gifted actor, or slightly intelligent.

Ugly and chunky...

So what does the "band playing the wrong song" excuse the fact that she still lip s(t)yncs...?

I have seen some pretty terrible singers at some of the operas I have been to. It makes you wonder what they did to get the gig in the first place.

At least she can sing well. Chances are she has a real down to earth personality.

to be fair, I'm not sure it's lip-syncing..
sounds like one of those intros the precedes pop song doesn't...I'm not sure she was meant to sing that part right then...
So maybe the band did mess up...dunno.
Either way. nice leprechaun dance.

Even the band wasn't playing at first. I think there were planning to perform a different song, and then when the tape started she freaked but the band played to the taped song.

They were planning on playing a different song, because the taped vocals that came in were from the song they had already performed 15 minutes earlier in the show.

That's the point, isn't it? If she's lip-synching you don't know if she'd capable or not. With enough studio magic I'm sure we'd all sound decent.

Funny catch though. Nice to see phonies exposed but it probably doesn't matter anyway. The pre-teens that are into her wouldn't care anyway.

From this article...
Teen songbird Ashlee Simpson had a microphone malfunction on "Saturday Night Live" last night, scurrying off stage when a production glitch caught her lip-synching the wrong tune.

The pop star, younger sister of singer and TV star Jessica Simpson, sounded great belting out "Pieces of Me" in her first segment on the show. It was the same song that she butchered at August's MTV Music Video Awards, drawing withering reviews for a flat, out of key performance.

But the triumphant moment turned into a debacle when she came out to debut the song "Autobiography" for a second set. But whoever was responsible for piping in a studio-engineered rendition for Simpson to mouth screwed up, playing "Pieces" once again.

The raven-haired beauty hopped around briefly, then slinked off the stage as her hapless band half-heartedly faked away. It didn't take long for critics to vent their rage on Ashlee Simpson's official Web site.
And from here...
Her record company, Geffen Records, said there was a computer glitch. Instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of Pieces of Me started mistakenly performing, the record company said in a statement.

But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common -- although almost always unspoken -- concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is.

Such vocal tricks have been used before on the show, making Saturday Night Live not entirely live, said a show insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“You know, its ironic that just at the point the lawyers and the businessmen had calculated how to control music, the internet comes along and ****s everything up.” Björk gives the finger again, this time waving it into the air. “God bless the internet,” she adds.

Lip-syncing is absolutely the standard for TV shows, by the way.

there are exceptions - both artists who'll refuse to, and shows that insist on live performance. That's expensive, though, and not widely done, to my knowledge.

And let'e not forget Enrique Iglesias's great voice, as taped from his microphone by a technician during a live, lip-synched performance of his in Poland.
