Wasn't sure where else to go with this one, so I thought I'd try you guys. I'm actually on my way to bed after a 2-3 hour conversation with a good friend of 14 years.
She was drunk- which I knew- and she has a history of this lately. But that's not necessarily my point. After 30 minutes of bitchin about another friend- she got onto how she can't deal with this right now- too much going on.
She goes on to talk about her mother with fibromyalgia- and her not wanting to see her in pain. We chatted bout that for a while and I ask "so what else is going on- you said you had alot to deal with."
After some silence = she tells me 5 years ago- she was dignosed with a rare disease- something to do with diabetes and the kidneys. She doesn't need a transplant- but the doctor did not expect her to live a year and she has made it 5. As for meds- no insulin- no dialysis- she says she takes "pills". Won't tell me the name of the disease- etc. The discussion went on vaguely and in circles for another 60 minutes.
Now I know a little about medical conditions- and this 30 yo female looks pretty healthy to me. 5'3"- 115 lbs. tan. She used to be my roomate- and I never saw her sick outside of a cold.
So I finally told her to go to bed. That took another 15 minutes.
But here I am wondering- what was she talking about- and should I believe her? She's been known to lie- but about something like this?!? Does such a disease exist that would cause no visible symptoms? Am I a b*tch for even doubting her?
Anyone have any thoughts on my freaky friend?

Why would they tell her she isn't going to live a year but she DOESN'T need a transplant?

Kidney problem and she drinks often? Smaaaaart.
I say that she wants attention and made the thing up. Given that you say you have known her for 14 years you'd think this would have come up sooner. Maybe not quite a pathological liar but I say it might be best to take things she says with a wink and a grain of salt. Chicks are nuts, drunks chicks are moreso.

Yeah it ain't adding up. She has a history of white lies, but to me this is huge!
If she's telling the truth- she needs me as a friend.
If she's lying- I'm nots ure I want her as a friend anymore.
Better sleep on it- had to get it off my chest though.
ugh.

People have their weird psychological brain farts from time to time. Perhaps her history of white lies just went a little overboard due to the alcohol. My first girlfriend (who I ended up dating for a LONG time) called me once about 6 months after we started dating telling me that she thought she might be pregnant because she'd missed a period. We had just gone "long-distance" about 5 weeks prior as we'd both gone off to college. It took me half an hour to convince her that she couldn't be pregnant because we hadn't slept together yet. And she didn't even drink Stress can cause people to "explore" fabricated scenarios out loud sometimes.
Next time you talk to her sober, try to bring it up again. If she was BS-ing on the phone with you, she'll probably try to play it down if its brought up again. If she starts playing it down ... LET HER. Don't jump her case over it ... if you come across as supportive either way, she'll probably be more likely to give you the real scoop.

I heard a similar story in a similar manner. Only it was thyroid cancer. I hadn't heard from this girl in years. She had even convinced her parents of it - as it turned out.
Still, it didn't change the fact that it was a completely fabricated story.
People are strange sometimes. It kinda scares me off when they are, though.
She just wants attention. Although next time she wants attention she'll need a better story.
Her name isn't Melody, is it?

IN high school this girl had a crush and me and she wanted attention from me. She made up some story how she had cancer on part of her liver and had to have part of it chopped out over the Christmas holidays but not to mention it to anyone.
I didn't believe her as I don't think you can get cancer on part of your liver, have it chopped out and be back in school with no problems 2 weeks later. I didn't send her flowers or a get well card like she was hoping for.
I saw her stomach a couple months later and there wasn't a scar, the whole thing was bull.

Yeah- I'm thinking that she's probably regretting telling me that today and will downplay it. If she tries to expound on it- I know I can figure out the truth- I don't think she remembers that I am an intelligent person.
The more I've thought about it- the more it doesn't add up anyway. But really, if this is a lie- I don't think I can ever believe a word out of her mouth again.
It's driving me nuts thinking about it though.

People pull this all the time for attention. My e(strange)d father once called my mom and told her the doctors said he was dying. Was hoping to get back together with her. That was about 5 years ago. He's fine, and not a peep about the illness since she shot him down.
Good luck sorting it all out! (sincerely)

Bottom line is NO, there is not a disease that has "something to do with diabetes and kidney disease". A type I or type II diabetic CAN get a kidney disease (about 10% of type I and 30% of type II) but these people HAVE diabetes and the kidney disease is caused by that. So, either she HAS diabetes and has developed kidney disease, OR she has some kind of kidney disease. One or the other. If she didn't want to name the disease and has been a friend for over 14 years my guess is that she is yanking your chain.

I knew this young lady once who made up all sorts of stuff to get my friend to stay with her. She claimed she had gotten pregnant and then aborted his kid and that she had some sort of brain cancer. She made up all sorts of crazy stuff. All lies. She was a desperate psycho freak. It happens.

Not thinking Münchhausen. Unless she does it again.
The general consensus seems to be that she's lying. But now, I'm in a wierd spot. Next time I see her or talk to her- I'm not sure how to act.
I wish I could confirm that she's lying. Because if she's not- I'll look like a real a**.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I didn't believe her as I don't think you can get cancer on part of your liver, have it chopped out and be back in school with no problems 2 weeks later.
Actually you can have liver tumours removed and be back in school 2 weeks later with zero problems. It's less likely with malignant tumours though.
I saw her stomach a couple months later and there wasn't a scar, the whole thing was bull.
Depends on the procedure. Some procedures don't require great big incisions.
She could very have been full of it, but it's possible she was telling the truth.

trust me this was one of a string of nutty lies that I busted her on a year later. The chick was nuts!
The best one was in grade 9 she was telling everyone she had a boyfriend in Germany and she showed everyone his picture all the time. Then one day she said he died in a car accident and acted all upset and got sympathy.
A year after that her cousin from Germany moved to Canada just to attend our school. Surprise surprise it was the same dude in the picture. Everyone still laughs about it now 10 years later.
