browsing through the forums, it's clear to me that the mysql (which these forums are based on) has scalability issues.

i'm sure everyone's seen this before:

Warning: mysql_connect(): User vbull has already more than 'max_user_connections' active connections in /var/www/macnn/macnn/forums/admin/db_mysql.php on line 40

it's a shame that it doesn't run on oracle or some other database.

Pretty bloody annoying yes. Maybe they need a better server or is it really the software's fault ?

odd that slashdot can run on mysql with no problems. macnn must get more traffic than I thought. mysql's strength is scalability (and price). For macnn, it has enough features, is free, and widely understood. Except by you.

MySQL definately has it weaknesses, but the problems macnn is having is not because mysql can't handle the traffic. In other words: do some research before you just dis a technology you don't understand.

So you're saying we should all pay $100 to join an internet forum so that it runs on Oracle? Geez.

Something Awful runs the same database and base forum software (albeit one that's been hacked to bits to make it way better than Jelsoft ever could) and it has more concurrent members and traffic than MacNN could ever hope to achieve, and it runs just fine. Granted, they probably have 10x the computing power behind it...

i did say other databases as well , i just threw in oracle because i'm more knowledgable with it over the others.

deathman: take it easy pal, most people will interpret that error message for face value and conclude that the database can't take the user load. it's also quite possible that this forum is running on much limited resources, as opposed to slashdot which may have a clustered database solution.

PostgreSQL would be a better choice, but vB would need a total rewrite.

you (read: the database admin) can set the max number of users that you want to be able to connect at one time. mysql can handle as many as you want it to. whenever i see that message here on macnn i assume that they have set the max users to 1 and are doing maintenance on the site. that's what i always have figured at least. many, many, many large sites use mysql and it can handle their loads just fine.

mysql can handle a forum like this just fine. It's how the server admin has it setup, as well as the resources available, that cause the issues.
When do you get the error? Just during the nightly backup (4:20am EST I believe), or other times?

This site slows to a crawl during peak usage times (Generally 'lunch time' 12:00 est thru 3:00 est).

The hardware should *more than* handle the traffic. I think it's more of a bandwidth issue.

MySQL gets more efficient as you put more time into getting it tuned to do exactly what you want.

And it takes a shitload of work.
