"This is enough to propel the FQ-400 from 0-60mph in an incredible 3.5 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 175mph*. It is a performance that even some of the world’s most exotic supercars struggle to match. The £330,000 Porsche Carrera GT, for example, requires 3.9 seconds to sprint from 0-62mph, while the ultra-exclusive Pagani Zonda needs 3.7 seconds. The BMW M3 – hitherto the benchmark ‘everyday supercar’ – takes 5.3 seconds to achieve the same feat."

And it further benefits from gloss black lightweight Team Dynamics alloy wheels and red ‘FQ-400’ badging
so they ADMIT that the badges make it faster. damn, i always thought all those ricers were full of it.
EDIT: the became they.

That is insane.
I have followed the Evo Lancers for years, since the first one entered the rallying scene many years ago... this make same fall in love with them all over again.
And all in a car that has the aerodynamics of a fridge...

They squashed the mirrors a little, to make it more aerodynamic.. you think they would have just made the whole thing a little more aerodynamic rather than just the mirrors.

while it is not low, and not all sleek like exotics, it is extremely aerodynamic for what it's made to do. the vortex generators on the back decreases drag and adds to downforce (varying speeds i'm guessing).
also, those drag inducing vents up front cools the intercooler charge, the engine, and at the bottom, air is channeled to cool the brakes, transmission, differentials etc.
and .. third .. the car is made to rocket into corners, hunker down and grip its way throughout the corner, then accelerate very fast and rocket to the next corner. it is not made to be a straight line rocket. although the acceleration is staggering, the top end speed probly isnt too much over current evo's (my guess ... at most 165-170 (doubtful on the 170)). it is built to pull out of corners, which explains the acceleration numbers .. notice they dont post a jaw dropping top speed.
that being said .. yeah ... why WASNT it me to post this baby? Gorgeous .. fast .... staggering ... wow ... anyone wanna guess what the "FQ" stands for?
benefits from badges = bragging rights, show-off-ability .. intimidation maybe? ... BADGES and *ESPECIALLY* STICKERS ... DO NOT ADD PERFORMANCE ... damn import tuner crowds ..

I think I have have driven nearly every model Lancer since the mid/late 90's, especially since the Evo 5... everything from early GSRs to RS models, onto the Makinen Edition, and most recently the MR stuff, on track, on the road and on rally stages... I was being 'ironic' about the aerodynamics
They are an awesome, awesome point to point machines.
Peace out,
TPC
P.S. How can anyone not think that a set of coloured Brembo calipers peeking out from some OZ rims *does* make a car go faster an stop better...

isn't that illegal for track use? can't release liquids on the road surface?

i doubt it. a bunch of evo's (with waterspray) currently runs on tracks. the water spray basically mists the intercooler to lower the charge temperature.
it's a sedan because of heritage. the evo was always a sedan and they've kept it that way. i remember the subaru having a coupe variant (impreza p1) but they're sedans as well now .. "shrug" ... maybe 4 doors adds stiffening? who knows...
oh well .. it is more practical
and zimp .. if they ever do go 2 doors ... they'd need to lower/change the roofline.
ugly/pretty = subjective
there are a lot of cars you guys find attractive that i dont.

And it's still not as fast as my daily driver. That's some kick ass performance and numbers. Though I'm not a fan of taxing the 4G63 that much.

what the fuzz is your daily driver? The 4g63 is bulletproof =) .. they've gone WAY farther than 400hp and still runs very reliably.

It depends on the form of racing and the sanctioning body. But in the racing I'm familiar with, releasing fluids onto the track is not explicitly illegal, however you can be black-flagged for pretty much anything, including fluid leaks. But if it was designed into the car, and if the scrutineers already passed it through tech inspection, that'd be a pretty harsh ruling to black-flag you for it.
Besides, if releasing liquids onto the track were illegal, then so would driving with a cold exhaust system, because it would drip water out the tailpipe.

No one said anything about the US GSR transmission being bulletproof. The 4g63 can hold upwards of 500 whp on stock internals. It is "old" technology but it still doesn't mean that it isn't any good. That doesn't count for anything?

My bulletproof motor couldn't handle a tiny Super 16G, let alone 625 bhp. It works great for some people, but anything with the word Mitsubishi in it should not have the word reliable or bulletproof in the same sentence.

Check that out. FQ400 vs a Lamborghini Murcielago.
few complaints of course. they were showing the evo in top gear rolling at 30 and complaining about turbo lag. the car is capable of 175mph top speed, of course it'll show significant turbo lag running 30mph on sixth gear. why didnt he just downshift? Cause he was nitpicking.
Then the clutch, which he handles very well, then all of a sudden nitpicks (i doubt he's having trouble with it, just that there is a potential for newbie drivers to frig up.) Also, with only 100?!? being made, I'm sure those 100 people aren't your usual car consumer.
I'm also unsure about the wheel arch stuff stripping (better be covered under that warrantee damnit) but seriously, it seems like he's just looking for things to complain about (turbo lag when starting from 30mph in 6th gear / clutch / blinkie lights on the stereo system?!? WTF) but, it's kinda trippy to watch this whole thing.
Of course I will admit this much, the turning radius is horrendous.
BTW, any car that can perform that well against a lamborghini murcielago (another car i like a LOT) and any driver that can do that well, will NOT have a problem with turbo lag (obviously there isnt a big issue with turbo lag if it can keep up with a lamborghini in a lot of situation).
Also the STIG run was done in the wet greasy slick course. If they run it in the dry, I'm sure the car woulda been in the top 3, instead of the top 4 to ever run the course, since dry times usually shorten by a second or more.

If you want to go fast for cheap, one of these should do it:
http://www.arielmotor.co.uk
This was on the last Top Gear on Sunday, £29,000, Honda Civic Type R Engine with a supercharger, 300bhp, weighs about 450kg (1000lb). The only thing that has gone around top gear's track faster than this car is a Ferrari Enzo and a Renault F1 car. OK so it hasn't got doors, or a roof, or a windscreen, or a back seat, and the luggage space is about the size of a lunchbox (really, theres a little compartment in the nosecone!), but it would kick just about any cars arse. And I say again - £29,000.

people say the evo's stripped down .. this thing is a bit much ... it wouldnt even protect you from a perched pigeon dropping on you from the rollcage. power and lightness .. looks like it'd be a hell of a lot of fun to play with though.
1 major downside. Car's so low, it's easy to end up UNDER an econobox. and you thought driving a civic around SUV's were scary...
edit: just realized, there is NO rollcage .. dang...

I drove one of these a while back, albeit one without the Supercharged Type R motor... Great fun, although to me was not quite 'there' chassis and handling wise... Arguably on the 'Top Gear' run, this was a bit off too, running *very* wide at the hammerhead when ideally it should have tucked in more.
However I am amazed at what they have done to it in the last few years!

I believe Jezza was demonstrating the low-urge weakness inherent in small-but-turbo'ed engines. This kind of thing, of course, doesn't happen with a V12 (a Lambo V12, for example, will accelerate strongly from 15mhpish in top gear). That's all he was saying, I reckon.

yeah .. but he made it seem like it was rediculous. why? there's a reason why they have a shifter in there. and while a lambo may accelerate "strongly" it TOO will be sluggish because it isnt in the right gear. making that statement is stupid considering all highly turbo'ed cars are this way. As long as you arent a moron and know how to downshift, you wont have this issue. and if you ARE going to fork over that cash for such a car .. chances are, you know how to drive a stick.
