This goes way beyond the religious tradition. Islam makes quite a point of stating that if it's necessary for you to not follow one of its tenets, you may do so without any sin upon you, so long as you resume when it's no longer necessary. This extrnds to dietary restrictions, the wearing of hijab, the daily prayers... heck; if you can't make the pilgrimage to Mecca you're forgiven for that, and you only need to do that once anyway. Even during Ramadan, if you're unable to fast you don't have to (though it's preferred that if you do this, you make up the days you skipped before the next Ramadan).
Islam would have had no problem with her removing the veil to give testimony. What this "ultimate embarrassment" crap is, I don't claim to know, but it's tacked on top of the religious tradition, rather than being the tradition itself.

Huh? Has it occurred to you that it might be her own beliefs? Quit being an idiot and consider your culture might not be the only "right" one.
Its very possible that she has some sort of facial deformity or such.

She's probably as hideous as the veil chick on that curb your enthusiasm episode.
And yep, the whole veil business (I'd rather kill myself) is a messed up, backwards, primitive, barbaric tradition. She and her whole family needs immediate psychiatric help. They live in a western country, not some cave in Afghanistan.

Xenophobia is alive and well in America. Some of you should feel lucky you won't be here in the next century, when Hispanics will be the majority in this country. The White Male is terrified.

Who's afraid of hispanics ?
Do hispanic women wear masks, and do hispanics lock up/hide their women at home ?

Is the woman in the article forced to wear the veil? Is she locked up/hidden at home?
If you actually read the article, you'll see that she has made the decision for herself. She wants to wear the veil and hasn't been forced to do anything.
You know, the sort of 'freedom' you seem to prefer where half-naked women dance around in music videos, is considered by other cultures to be quite oppressive.
You need to start realising that there are a great many different cultures that exist around the world, none of which are 'superior' to another but simply reflect different lifestyles and traditions.

That is a deceptively simple statement and you know it. This isn't just some culture that is treating women wrong. This is part of a religion that does in fact prefer men, or at least puts them at the top of the chain.
But hold on to your pig tails: the #1 religion in the "free" US is also male-dominant. Of course that doesn't count because America is "free". Which apparently means you can practice any religion (so long as it doesn't go against the law, such as female mutilation) and get as much toleration as anyone else. Unless we don't like you.
So come to The Land of the Free, and let us alter your culture to make us feel comfortable!

Me thinks it got something to do with the male population blowing tenets out of proportion, like the way Christianity was practiced during colonial times. "You'll go to hell, you go to hell, you'll go to hell..." and nothing was mentioned of God's love and mercy.

I have no problem with her testifying with it on, BUT I am confused as to why it is the defense team that wants her to take it off. She is testifying against their client. The whole veil thing will hurt her testimony because of the impression of distrust and if it is played right they can spin it to so the jury feels she has something to hide. I’d want her to keep it on simply because it would help me. So If she keeps it on she is only really hurting the prosecution’s side which would be too bad if the gentleman is really guilty of insurance fraud.
With that said, if this were about her wanting to keep it on during a drivers license photo, ID card, or some kind of security screening her beliefs at that point mean jack sh!t.

That’s just absolute crap. In terms of what they bring to the table of contributions to the world there most defiantly are superior cultures. Contributions to math ,science, literature, economic gains, invention etc.., are certainly the marks of a superior society. Which is not to say that Islam has not made significant contributions to the knowledge of man, they just haven’t contributed much in the past few hundred years. By today’s standards which are mostly scientific and economically based if certain cultures dropped off the planet it would cause chaos all over the planet because they are/were a keystone to what stability we do have in the world. There are many cultures all over the world but I don’t think you can call them all great.

If you want to evaluate cultures in the context of a narrow set of factors - such as their scientific and economic contributions to society - then yes, I suppose you could say that some cultures exceed in this area than others. But, culture is not the only thing that contributes to a societies economic and scientific development so to judge according to such factors on the basis of culture isn't enough.
Different cultures make different contributions to society. Some cultures may lack in certain areas but exceed in others. The existence of such a vast amount of cultures contributes to diversity, which should be valued imo.

That’s very politically correct of you. But diversity only helps humanity in terms of the gene pool. I don’t think my criteria is narrow at all. I may have not listed every discipline in my list but you can judge whatever society you like by what they have brought to any of the academic fields. Collective knowledge is the only thing that lives beyond the lifespan of a civilization. Diversity means crap.

The thing is that math, science, literature, economic gains, invention mean absolutely nothing outside of that culture. Cultures exist to serve themselves not to contribute to the world. Certain cultures value different things and thus produce them in greater or lesser quantity with many exceptions. Things which American culture values are completely abhorred by Islamic culture. Values held by Chinese culture are abhorrent to Americans, and so forth.
They have all contributed significantly to the world and for that I see them as equals. Take any stone away and they'll all go down the crapper, regardless of which currently bears the greater weight.

Correction: shared knowledge lives beyond the civilization's live-span. Diversity keeps knowledge safe and preserved.
