It's funny because everyone assumes that the string melody that the song "Bittersweet Symphony" is so famous for is the sample, but it's not.
The problem was that because a Rolling Stones sample (from an orchestral version of one of their songs) was used for atmosphere underneath the strings with a slight a "bong!" sound, no one with The Verve thought there would be an issue with it being used. The band had a release date and the permission for the sample, so the album was printed and the song became a big hit.
Suddenly, because it was a cash cow, the Rolling Stones suddenly made a huge fuss and demanded a huge portion of the royalties along with the permission! It was impossible to pull the song at this point and re-record it wiothout the sample, so band just went ahead.
They weren't sued, but they made no money from this their biggest hit because there were some greedy sacks of lawyer sh*t clinging to the Rolling Stones copyright machine.
