Elvis, Beatles, or Johnny Cash?

A bunch of us were having a discussion at work tonight, and one guy proposed that "Pulp Fiction" had it all wrong. It's not just "Beatles or Elvis?". It should have been "Are you a Beatles, Elvis, or Johnny Cash man?".
Personally, Johnny Cash.
How about yourself?

Really? I just don't see it turning too bad.
Cash sings about things that move my soul. He was a hard livin' man who turned his own world around so many times even he didn't know if he was sober or smashed. I have felt that way before.
Plus his songs aren't just cutesy love songs like Elvis or the Beatles used to get famous. Cash wrote love songs, but they weren't typical loves songs. There was always a sense of reality in them. He was a real man sharing himself. Not an image.
I am really looking forward to the movie they are making about him. Walk The Line.

Beatles? should be just John Lennon.
Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...
Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...
Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

A certain four-letter word, much to my surprise, hasn't found its way into this thread yet, and as such, I voted Cash. I think I'll leave this thread alone now.

I saw Cash with The Highway Men back when the Breslin Center opened on the campus of MSU. What a great show. Last event I attended with my dad (we would go to tractor pulls and demolution derbys and that sorta thing).

Obviously, that's not the part I am talking about.
This is the part I have objection with:
Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...
If there is no heaven, then there is nothing to live for. If people simply live for today, then chaos can ensue.
The true problem with this song os that J.L. forgot about the truly evil persons living in the world.
Sure, it would be nice to dream, but dreaming doesn't feed my family or keep them safe.

I think to understand the song properly you've got to approach it from Lennon's Buddhist influenced thinking.
Buddhism states that the cause of suffering is a desire to have and control things. It can take many forms: craving of sensual pleasures; the desire for fame; the desire to avoid unpleasant sensations, like fear, anger or jealousy.
Samadhi, one of the three practices (comparable to Christian meditation using, for example, a rosary) states that eveloping one's mind is the path to wisdom which in turn leads to personal freedom. Mental development also strengthens and controls our mind. this helps us maintain good conduct.
It's important to know that in Buddhism you don't have to wait until after death to achieve enlightenment, or Nirvana. Thus, no heaven.

Buddhism tends to be tolerant of other beliefs. Even Elvis-worshippers.
Elvis is a weird one for me. I can't help but thinking that I really should like his music. Yet, for some reason, it just doesn't do it for me. Then I listen to some of his early stuff and I am 'damn, that's brilliant'.

Beatles! I do like Cash and early Elvis too.
Just remember; Slim Whitman sold more records than the Beatles and Elvis combined and nobody, but nobody, can sing Rosemarie like ol' Slim.
Now I'm off to go listen to some Boxcar Willie.

Do you take everything you read online so seriously?
It's a rather obscure joke. You see, back in the 70's and 80's there were TV advertisements featuring a Slim Whitman compilation. It was stated that he "sold more records than the Beatles and Elvis combined". I don't know where the figures came from, but one has reason to doubt.
Now, re-read my post. I said nobody could sing "Rose Marie" better than Slim. And If you've never heard of him, how would you know that a lot of people can sing better than him?

Heh, I remember those. I used to wonder whose ass they pulled those 'figures' out of. If I recall right, Boxcar Willie claimed to have 'sold more records than the Beatles and Elvis' also.
Perhaps there was one cheesy little corner record store somewhere in Outer Oshkosh where all of this 'outselling' the Beatles and Elvis took place.
Oh, and Beatles.

That I'd like to see some proof of. I know who Slim is and Boxcar Willie as well (I'm 57), but to say the he outsold the Beatles and Elvis combined is stretching it, IMHO.

Well, I'm glad that at least one person knows what I'm talking about. You even remember the Boxcar Willie ads! Yeah, that "more records than the Beatles and Elvis combined" always caused a skeptical eyebrow to be raised. Perhaps you're right about the Oshkosh record store.
Say, you don't happen to remember what the names were of the two old geezers who each played a harmonica in a rather disgusting fashion? It was around the same time as the Whitman and Willie ads. I didn't even know then why it looked disgusting but it did. I just can't recall their names.
Why don't women play the harmonica?

I refuse to choose. Not an Elvis fan, but asking me Beatles or Cash is like asking me "left eye or right eye?" I wouldn't want to live without either.
I so posted in this thread.
