Hi there,

I would like to have the chance to create a blog with some friends, so firstly I am going to ask what do you think is the best option, some time ago .Mac has an offer on software to create blogs, iBlog maybe, I want to think that option is going to create it on my .Mac address, right?, is any good the integration?

Then I gave a look to Google´s Blogger, it could be enough for my purposes, but I would like to be able to customize a template, I have no idea how hard that could be.

To be honest, this is my maiden though about creating a Blog, so please "understand" me if I have done some mistake asking about it.

Blogwave might fit your needs. But do NOT, I repeat, do NOT use Blogger. Tech support=****.

MovableType ain't bad either.

Versiontracker isn't much help for blogging software. It doesn't give you nearly all the options.

The real question is: Have you got access to webspace? And if so, can you run programs like Movable Type on there? Ask tech support if you're not sure. If not, then the best option is to work with your existing .mac account. Then versiontracker is a good idea.

If you want a ready made solution (and don't mind the $8.00 - $14.00 a month subscription fee) then TypePad is a goo idea. You can try the service for free for a month to see if you like it.

I'll say go for a cheap host and run MoveableType on the server. It's really not that hard to setup, especially if you have a good host with all the right stuff installed. You can still download the 2.6 version that's free and lets you have multiple blogs/authors.

If you've got a server with MySQL access and PHP go with www.wordpress.org

If not go with whatever crap you want. Most of the non-MySQL blogs are crap.

do you have your own server that has the ability to run cgi scripts? if not, you might like to look at dreamhost.com (clicking that link will say i reffered you. if you do not want this then just type in dreamhost.com in your addressbar.) there is a coupon for 1 year of their cheapest hosting for $9.24. 800mb of space, 40gb transfer. php, mysql, etc. (pm me if you want it)

if you do i would suggest movable type [ http://www.movabletype.org ].
they have a free version which will let one author create up to 3 blogs. there is pricing for other more than one author.

installing it is not that difficult. i have done many installs of it. if you decide to go this route and you need help with the installation of it then email me and i can give you a hand.

if you look at my site [ http://mike.cosentino.name ] you will see it is created with movable type. the news page has categories which all have their own templates. the work page has a design and a drawings blog which i post new designs and drawings to, and thus each individual design or drawing is like a news post and can be commented on.

movable type supports various plugins which are neat. i am using dropcap which makes the first letter of the latest post large. the support forums are very helpful too.

WordPress gives you unlimited authors and blogs, is opensource, has a dead-easy install, and all those plugins

I'll throw in my vote for WordPress too. If you have PHP and MySQL on your server, you don't need anything more - and the WP support forums are great, they can help you with pretty much anything! If you already know PHP, customising WP is a piece of cake, and even for PHP-analphabets (like me), it's not that hard. If you go to my site, you can see two different blogs both made with WP (one in English and one in Danish), and you can see a little of how customisable it is.
