That is a copy of reality - what artists and students have
been doing since man first started mark making.
Photography is still a grey area as it is still only a copy of
reality, but Warhol is famous for many different visual styles,
Roy is only famous for his cartoon style of applying paint onto
canvas, and many don't know how he came by the images or
the extent of their similarity with the originals.

The comic artists who created the originals drew them 'mostly'
from their imagination yet it is considered worthless pulp. mimesis
is always more important than originality.

Pop Art is more about inspired selection than about raw creativity. The originals were illustrations, Liechtenstein's versions are art. Context (and small stylistic differences) are all that stand between the two worlds. Beauty is everywhere, but rarely noticed or considered for more than a few passing moments. Found objects, readymades, and pop art are the pointing finger that forces the observer to stay their eyes for a little longer and really consider the image or object that is selected, maybe to recognize the beauty in a form that is too easily passed over because it is familiar. The images are wonderful, but I would have never seen them if not for Liechtenstein's work.

Roy Lichtenstein is a talentless, thieving, hack.

But then, B9, aren't you the guy who like photocopies?

As a fan of Lichtenstein, I find that very interesting. I knew he was inspired by comic book art, but I didn't know he borrowed from it that literally. It certainly adds an additional dimension.

In legal terms, it's very similar to the Warhol soup can painting, which I've used in copyright/fair use presentations. What's interesting about both of them, and about contemporary art in general, is that their work can be seen as parody, commentary, and homage all at the same time. The Lichtensteins are probably closer to the infringement edge than the Warhols because they're more likely to impinge on a market for the originals, but they're transformative enough that I think they would escape an infringement claim. For one thing, the Lichtensteins are just single frames and don't have the narrative context of the originals. It could also be argued that if it weren't for Lichtenstein, the originals would have no market value in the first place. Indeed, it's Lichtenstein who made us appreciate how cool the originals are.
