I see no reason why the Gov wont let pot be used by people that are dying anyhow.
How is it going to hurt them?
And glaucoma victims, it makes their life so much better. I know one that uses it for that, and don't even smoke enough to get high. He has premo stuff too and could.
This absurdness needs to stop.

The initiative in Alaska failed.
This bill would remove civil and criminal penalties under state law for persons 21 years or older who grow, use, sell, or give away marijuana or hemp products. State or local government could not require a permit or license for personal cultivation or distribution of marijuana, but could regulate marijuana like alcohol or tobacco. It removes all existing state restrictions on prescription of marijuana by a doctor for all patients, including children. It allows for laws limiting marijuana use in public and to protect public safety.

I guess we'll continue wasting money on folks who are doing no harm.

They should just legalize the $hit and have the government sell it to all the pot heads with a huge tax that could go towards health care or education or paying off the huge deficit.
While they are at it, they could do the same thing to alcohol, cigarettes and junk food.

Exactly, legalize it, institute some quality control so that consumers know what they're getting, prohibit distribution to minors, and tax the hell out of it. Sending people to jail for pot is a huge waste of resources. The stuff is everywhere anyway, there might as well be a public benefit from its use.

Marijuana, though technically not as dangerous as alcohol, could unfortunately still pose problems. It's not safe to drive while high; it's not safe to work/operate heavy machinery; and it stays in your system much longer than alcohol. I'm not especially knowledgeable when it comes to the drug-testing data, but it could pose some legal problems if accusations fly and a "safe"-user is believed to be smoking on the job.

As a libertarian leaning Montanan, my first thought was to vote for the measure.
Then I read more about it.
It does not provide that a "patient" have a prescription from a licensed Physician. The definitions of what illnesses qualified were very vague. All you had to do is be under the care of a "caretaker." Employers cannot ask employees if they smoke, nor can they test for it. You can't even ask if an employee appears high at work.
Not to mention that the benefits of "medical" marijuana can be achieved through THC containing drops and Marinol (a pill form), both of which are legal, FDA approved and available by prescription.
All this measure amounts to is a back-door way of fooling the people of the state of Montana (who lean very much towards the get-the-government-out-of-my-life way of things) into legalizing pot.
I voted against it. Had they been honest about their intentions and just made it a referendum on legalization, I probably would have voted for it.
Ironically, the people of Montana passed the marijuana measure, banned gay marriage and continued the ban on mining using cyanide leach methods. Of course the chances of you dying from cyanide leach mining are much much less than dying from lung cancer caused from smoking pot, but that's another story.
(I voted against, against and for the above measures.)

Wow! Maybe in another 4 years some state will pass a weed law that will make everyone happy. You know, somewhere in the lower 48 states.

It's not safe to drive while [drunk]; it's not safe to work/operate heavy machinery either. Both are illegal. Many of the same laws that apply to alcohol would also fit marajuana. It's not like they're going to give us carte blanche to do whatever we want while being high.
