Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children...
This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

Every isolated passion, is, in isolation, insane; sanity may be defined as synthesis of insanities. Every dominant passion generates a dominant fear, the fear of its non-fulfillment. Every dominant fear generates a nightmare, sometimes in form of explicit and conscious fanaticism, sometimes in paralyzing timidity, sometimes in an unconscious or subconscious terror which finds expression only in dreams. the man who wishes to preserve sanity in a dangerous world should summon in his own mind a parliament of fears, in which each in turn is voted absurd by all the others.

I highly doubt Bertrand would disagree with the topic starter.

I didn't know 'Bertrand' but I think he might have said naive as well.
Between 1953-61 Dwight over saw and condoned the beginnings of
the senseless arms race, with munitions manufacturers the only winners.
Something 'Bertrand was vehemently against.
Sounds like political rhetoric. Something a country says without actually
ever intending to do anything about it.
What would those laborers and the 'genius of its scientists'
be doing now if Dwight's ghostwriter could have had his way
- making another dozen shampoos or breakfast cereals in the
private sector.

Ike did have a good message with this pithy quip. Mankind cannot seem to live together for some reason. It was said that with the information revolution, people would talk with each other, and then share compassion with one another. This communication would let people understand what another person feels, and to share your own beliefs, so that one day, people could live together, and be passionate about the life of others. However, this is sadly not true.
People just do not care about life in this new world. This is seen with every war that is waged, every murder that takes place, every abortion carried out, and every beheading video downloaded. Violence takes place when we are selfish. Too selfish to share our nation with others, too selfish to share our time with others, to selfish to share our bodies and our families with others, and too selfish to share our feelings of deep regret for the loss of a loved one with others.
The reason is because it is always easier to remove our problems, then to live and work with them. As long as killing someone will help you in some way or form, such a thing will never end. There will always be people who will always take the path of least resistance, and as long as killing will fulfill their requirement for happiness, that is what will be done.
People will always make themselves believe what they need to in order to feel better about this idea. A Jew is not a person, neither is someone with black skin. Neither is a Shiite or Sunni, or any Muslim for that matter. Surly a fetus and embryo is not a person, just as a Native American is only a savage. The Japanese were not people, which is why it was okay to use nuclear weapons on them, and the Americans were dogs at best, which is why it was acceptable to dissect them too. Surly homosexuals are not people, they cannot even reproduce, and those with mental or physical disabilities, well they are just better off dead anyway. And this man who was killed on video, well I did not know him, so it is okay to laugh at his misfortune.
Not until people have compassion and caring for everyone, no matter how small or big, no matter how or where they live. Only until people care for all people, and are willing to do anything to care for the other, only then will we start to live the life that all people deserve to live. It is in this capacity, that everyone in America, and the World has failed.
The reason that the information revolution never did change the world, is because it is not separation of believes that makes us harm each other. It is because we are at our hearts, selfish. Only until all people mature into civilized individuals, or until harming others will cease to help us, there will always be problems in the form of physical violence.

No. It's just a fact that threats are never going to go away. Simple as that. This isn't Star Trek - we're not all happy.

there are only two reasons for these threats. limited resources and ideological zealotry. both could have been dispensed with a long time ago.
