So, it's the 21st of a really good friend of mine... what to get? Between us, said friend and I are getting another friend an engraved hip flask (just to give you some sort of idea). Want it to be something that he'll be able to keep, but at the end of the day I am a student so don't have all the money in the world. Any ideas?

Maybe a little more background on your friend?

Well, you know that old question about 'what to get for the man who's got everything'? Well that's him! He's got a MiniCooper, games consoles, all the usual kit. Hasn't got an iPod yet actually but that's out of my price range - he invested in MD. He's into his music, plays rugby, just started at Uni reading history. Don't like to reveal too much about anyone on the interweb, but that should give you an idea!
I_rooster - discreet yet tasteful. An obvious winner, thanks very much...
Secret_Police - not a bad idea actually... could get a vintage port at least. What's the closest vintage year to 1983 anyone? (Is '83 itself a vintage?)

I certainly hope that he/she isn't from a puppy mill.

You could get him a gift certificate to iTMS. That way if he isn't a Mac fan, it's a way to get him started.

good bit of alcohol, and a box of relatively nice cigars for you all to enjoy is always a good call.
Hip flasks are always popular, every friend of mine got one for their 19th.
Failing all that, a stripper is always classless and embarrassing, and good for a laugh.

Up at school (MSU) it was tradition to play 'pass the fifth' on birthdays, 21st in particular. We would always default to Jagermeister, but there was a mishap one one occasion where Hennessey was the liquor of choice. Let's just say it wasn't that easy to clean up.
My opinion: You don't have to buy him anything. Just take him out to the bar, have fun, and make sure he gets home in one piece.
Honestly, you won't use a flask all that often.
