I can finally sit back and be proud of the work I've accomplished during the last year (part time tho.)... this is the most complex application I've ever written. It's almost 15 000 lines of Objective-C cocoa code I've written alone... during countless hours. Countless new features.. everything re coded from scratch. Wow. It's finally there. The bug list is empty. This is a sacred moment.
My greatest computer-related realisation..
it's BurnoutMenu 2.0.
I cannot push the big red "release" button until I do the HTML site and the new store.. but still. The hard part is behind me.
So what are you guys up to.. what are your projects (done and in progress?)

Maybe it would have taken less then a year if you'd remove Max Payne and Quake 3 from your dock?
PS I can make Curry Rice in 5 minutes. The Josh wants his curry.

Oh ... darn ... from the title I thought you had finally grown a real goatee
Seriously, congratulations. That's a LOT of code. I used to code professionally for Windows but it was several people working on individual features of releases .... nothing that took more than 12-14 weeks per feature, tops. 1 solid year of coding and 15k individually written lines doesn't even begin to tell the story of the work you had to do with concept, purpose, and design of a piece of software for release. Way to go, man

It's a task manager that fits in your iLife (e.g. iCal, iDisk, iPod support...) it's also unobstrusive since it can stay in your menu bar.

Sounds pretty neat.
I actually just did a little "research" on BurnoutMenu's earlier version at MacUpdate -- and I found some serial numbers for it You might watch out for that.

I don't really care about pirates, if you wanna know the truth.
Yes I did pirate SW when I was a kid... people who have money will buy it and people who don't will not... or will wait until they get money. That's the way I see it.
Data Xfered over the 'net is almost free.. it's not as if they had stolen my ... advance copy of Halo 2 or something.

it would also be cool if you had a transparent or semi-transparent place on the desktop that was under all apps unless a global hotkey was pressed that actively showed you the highest priority tasks to do.
Also have you had any beta testers? I have looked at many to-do/task apps and never found one that "worked" for my personality and tasks. If you haven't had any testers I would love to - I'm always on the lookout for a good app.
|
|

That's already planned for a future version. Somekind of... ticker or something.
Along with a Calendar feature (in Sync with iCal of course).
The way you can rapidly see your items in BM2 is... assign a HotKey to open the menu (done via the prefs).. you can apply a filter to the menu and say "I just want to see important items".
Also have you had any beta testers? I have looked at many to-do/task apps and never found one that "worked" for my personality and tasks. If you haven't had any testers I would love to - I'm always on the lookout for a good app.
Can you email me jolivierld@gmail.com

I am currently porting a shopping list manager done in FileMaker Pro to Cocoa. Hopefully it'll be done by the end of the year. It's taking a while as I have little spare time. I also have a tech support database product that I work on, and also need to update my web site to post-1995 standards.

Only computer-related project of sorts is trying to get VBRFIX to work correctly on a Mac, I'll be doing some more testing on the weekend if all goes well and trying to convince the author to help me out.
Also going to return to my Lego building frenzy and try to finish off the old school 1970s sets that I have, doing the research for the instructions on BrickShelf.com and related web sites.

Congratulation on your hard work.
And to add to the thread:
I am editing my book (340) pages worth of it. It sucks (the editing), but I have to do it. I registered the web domain, working on the content and beginning to recruit readers to give me feedback on the characters and flow.
The story is a historical/fiction piece where poetry and dream surrealism is very much used. It focuses on women, the Spanish Civil War, and life in general (in the U.S, Mexico and Spain). My intent is to focus on the worst of humanity and by the characters struggle and eventual survival, highlight the best of humanity. It's a kids' story (not). I hope to go to print by July of next year.

I'll have to give it a shot when you release it. Looks very nice though! There really is nothing as satisfying as writing software... well, almost nothing
Personally, I'm busy with school-related projects for another month -- a file transfer client/server and a Microsoft Visio clone. Okay by me for now, because I haven't come up with a Cocoa app I'd like to do, though I'm thinking of working on a puzzle or strategy game of some sort (which inevitably leads me back to the realization that I lack artistic skills).

The thing that I am proudest of is a Java assignment we had to code for a Software Engineering Course. It was the transaction, scheduling, administration and registration system for a fitness center.
25,000 lines later, and countless all nighters and all weekenders we produced an assignment that got a perfect grade for the final release.
I was/am very proud of it, however, my uni deleted our SQL database off of their servers, and we never implemented any code to set up the fields and types from scratch (we did it manually), so our system is useless now.
It isn't the most well designed thing I have ever written, but I learned so much about OO, design, and user interface. My next massive undertaking, for an AI course, should prove to be very interesting, I can't wait to apply what I learned and implement our search model.
I look forward to seeing your product released, I'll certainly give it a try. Congrats.

history1me: I hope you have an agent or will consider getting one when you're finished, to secure a publishing deal for your story. Try to avoid publishing it yourself, because mainstream publsihers tend to brand that "vanity press" and it can cost you future deals, and more immediately, readers, because it will be much, much harder to get reviewed and get widely retailed.
My 2 cents (as a person working in literary publishing).

When you were young and your heart was an open book, you used to say "live and let live."
But if this ever changing world, in which we live in, makes you give in and cry, say "live and let die."

Congrats!
To answer your question, I've got a couple of personal projects going, and they're both music-related.
The first is learning the continuo part (harpsichord and organ) for Handel's Messiah, which I'll be performing with the DMCO next month. Whole lotta notes there.
The second is continuing work on composing my first (and, at this rate, probably my only) concerto for piano and orchestra. I started it during the summer between my sophomore and junior years in college, and work on it has been very slow since, due mostly to tight schedules and a killer case of writer's block.

That's pretty funny... 161 lines of code.
My current project is a photo store that photographers place their pictures on and the users buy them. It may sound gay (because my description skills suck) but it is pretty awsome. We already have one willing photographer to be our beta tester. There sure is a lot that goes into an application.. even a small one.

Damned good job, ambush. Looks to be a thorough and extremely polished application, especially for an oeuvre of one person. And considering all your familial mini-dramas, extra congratulations for the focus and dedication.
I do not do cocoa, but more Java/C/MatLab for our lab. Very task-specific apps that analyze (usually) fMRI scans and the such and apps that are used to test for certain cognitive capacities. So, no, you will never see these floating around on the net.
