Safari?

I do use FF at work when I have to use a PC but I still like Safari on the Mac side. And with the improvements in Safari 2.0 when it comes out...

Actually, you're a little more than a day early, given that this is a Mac site. The Mac version of Firefox won't be released tomorrow; it's going to take a little more time. In fact, I don't think they actually announced a release date for the Mac version, though it'll probably be within the next two or three weeks.

err, I don't think that a browser for 2% of the computer market counts as 'for the masses'.

news.bbc.co.uk for a start. Try loading the audio/video console. It crashed for me. This was the second time I'd given Firefox a go, and the first time it had crashed (can't remember where) after literally less than 5 mins of use. I can't be doing with that, so both times it's gone straight into the trash.

I assume you mean the "Video" link that gives you either a RealVideo or WMP video feed? I just tried it in Firefox 1.0RC2 and it did not crash. The RealVideo version got weird and put its controls in the wrong place, and the WMP version would not play, giving me repeated errors about "Could not create a unique tmp file," but there was not a crash.

I've found Firefox (and Mozilla, Camino, etc.) to be more compatible than Safari.

1.0 RC2? Is that the version on the Mac? Or are you on Windows? Last time I checked (only a few days ago) I'm sure the Mac version wasn't at that stage?

I'm on Mac.

Also, I just upgraded to the latest RealPlayer and the latest nightly of Firefox, and now the RealPlayer video controls on news.bbc.co.uk are rendered correctly.

I don't use Firefox, but my wife uses it occasionally. So I'm sure that she will be interested in the update when it arrives.

My bank, for one. newschannel4.com. I have issues with sites like Compusa, circuit city. I have to stick with IE on Windows. Safari's not AS bad, but it seems like IE's the one to run if you want the sites to work.

Way to be extremely vague. "Issues" is not a verifiable claim. Would you care to be more specific?

Also note that "newschannel4.com" does not exist--it redirects to www.wnbc.com.

Great, so two hands needed. I tried the version at the link you specified, and indeed it did work with the BBC news player. But then it hung while trying to load another BBC story and forums.macnn.com. Maybe Firefox and I just aren't meant for each other.

Actually, according to Kevin Gerich, the Mac 1.0 is coming out at the same time as 1.0 for Windows and Linux.

Or you can use ctrl-tab and ctrl-shift-tab. Those only require one hand.

Is there a way to change the order of the tabs in Firefox? Such as dragging one from the right over to the left?

All I want from the 1.0 release is for the app to respect the dock. Other than that one bug, it is perfect in my eyes. I especially love blocking all Flash content.

Cocoa apps don't do this. They respect the dock and no window that is spawned will go below it. I'm pretty sure you can also program your app to respect the dock. It's just annoying for me because I usually put my iTunes controller in the bottom left hand corner of the screen and having windows down there forces me to hide FireFox to access the controller.

I see. I guess that doesn't bother me because I only use one window. You can have Firefox open links from other apps, and links that want to open a new window, in a new tab in the current window.

Cool. All I want from Firefox (or Camino) is for it to use OSX spellchecking and for command+page up/page down to take me to the top/bottom pages, like Safari.

oh, and scrolling, I want it to scroll faster.

Home and End already do this. And I believe you mean command+up/down arrow keys; command+page up/down just makes it scroll one page up or down, the same as if you don't hold command.

Why couldn't they make a proper cocoa version of this for the Mac? It would probably be easier for the developers in the long run, and it would feel a lot more "Mac-like" for sure. Whenever I use it, it feels like I'm using a Windows-port (which it is). Thats why I prefer Safari/Camino.

The Windows version is great though.

On a Powerbook and Firefox here. fn+home(left arrow) = top of page. fn+end(right arrow) = bottom of page. But I'd like to be able to to that one-handed (oh no here we go with the one-handed thing again, , It's just what I'm used to ok?)

command+page up (up arrow)/page down (down arrow) doesn't do anything for me.

mozilla.org is busy! I can't get any where near it. ok got it. ooo shiney icon. Cool, pinball theme still works. Scrolling still slow, no spellcheck.

Safari sitll looking better in my opinion especially after the 10.3.6 update. Firefox is still a strong stand by no doubt.

There's a better way. Use the Command key in addition to a number. Your left-most tab is CMD 1, the one just to the right of it is CMD 2, etc. Very nice for when you want to jump from say tab 6 to tab 1 in one simple key combination. I'd love to see this in other browsers, but I also like that Safari uses this key combination to access your Bookmark Bar links.

I meant in Safari.

And for everyone who's getting into Firefox for the first time:

Prettier themes
Prettier widgets

And be sure to check out extensions like Adblock, Sage, and Web Developer.

I would also love spellchecking, but that's probably not going to happen. Firefox is not Cocoa and it can't take advantage of the native spell-check feature of OS X. But for the other two options, you're in luck. Check out the extensions. I know there is one that allows you to customize certain keys to jump to the top of the page or the bottom, so you can sent CMD+Down Arrow to take you to the bottom, just like Safari does. As for scrolling, I use SuperScroll, which isn't compatible with Firefox 1.0, but still a great extension. If you can live without spellchecking. I still prefer Safari most of the time. It uses fewer system resources (RAM and virtual memory) and it has spellchecker, native GUI, etc. Still, I fire up the fox every now and then. I like Firefox's aqua theme over all other browsers. The navigation icons are really nice.

I agree with that. However, I think I will start using Firefox because it is much faster than Safari.

I just saw that; I hadn't been aware.

I don't know what to think of that, to be honest. It's good to have the 1.0 version, I guess (not that the number has any real meaning, but it's a mindshare thing), but it'll bring out the zealots for sure, saying it's not "Mac-like" enough.
