I've progressively learned how negative offering rewards every time parents want their children to do good is. To many parents consider handing their kid a twenty to be a valid show of love and a good replacement for a hug.

I would have too, although I also know the pain of being a kid and being given twenty bucks and told to have fun instead of actually getting to spend real time with my parents.

Worked well on me. I got spanked once because of my grades, I was 8, and after that I was an A student for the rest of my academic life.

You have got to be joking... Can we say stuck up spoiled brat? If a kid wants a computer, let him earn enough to pay for it. That way he both learns to work for a living and will take better care of it since he bought it. Kids these days....

Well really... he did earn it. He mother made a deal that if he did well in school that she would buy him a computer.

Still a bad way to bribe your kid though. :/

If she can't afford to purchase a computer, the boy needs to learn to reality of economics.

No, only people from Hong Kong and Taiwan. They have been influence by the Western world far much longer.

That's the reason why you/we aren't like that kid... we weren't raised by... uh.. idiots.

It's amazing the stories the wife (middle school teacher) brings home on a daily basis.

Parent: I'm calling because I don't understand why Johnny is getting a "D".
wife: he hasn't done any of his homework, and he failed his last quiz.
Parent: What homework? You don't assign homework - do you? I haven't seen him do any homework. How come you didn't tell me you assign homework??
wife: .............

Parent: Is it possible for Mikey to retake his quiz?
wife: ok.. have him stop by tomorrow during lunch.

- Kid never shows up-

Later that day:
wife: Mikey, how come you didn't show up to retake your quiz.
Kid: huh?
Teacher: The quiz you were supposed to retake during lunch???
Kid: huh?
Teacher: Didn't your mom tell you?
Kid: No, she went out of town today.

Im a kid (16). My dad owns a store that sells apple computers, they carry the entire line. They wont buy me a computer, so I'm saving up for a ibook. I don't mind, i like feeling like iv earned something, there's no fun in being handed everything on a silver platter. No feeling of accomplishment.

But it would be nice...

Quite the contrary, I'd say. In my experience, perhaps due to the fact that the general standard of living is so much higher in Hong Kong and Taiwan than in Mainland China, Hongkongers and Taiwanese are much less materialistic and money-crazy than Mainland Chinese. Possibly it also has something to do with Hong Kong and Taiwan being introduced "gradually" to the Western world and its perks, whereas China sort of went from being hyper-communist and anti-Western to idolising everything about the West from one day to the next. Given the zest the Chinese always show for everything their government brainwashes them into believing is a Good Thing, it's only natural that they'd go completely overboard and turn themselves into money-crazy machines.

Hmm... I've been lucky enough to somehow convince my parents to help me buy a computer. "I really need one for college... and for going abroad..."

Have you ever done business with the Hong Kong Chinese person?
It doesn't seem like it; they make the Mainland Chinese look like schoolkids.

I tried desperately to get my parents to buy me a computer while I was in high school. As much of a computer geek I was, I only had a Quadra that was on semi-permanent loan from a friend. I ended up buying a car with the money from my working and didn't own a computer until college.

I'm lucky though. I couldn't get through college without my parents.

The Chinese look like schoolkids just fine by themselves, I'd say...

Have you ever seen 25 Chinese people get into a huge brick-hurling, knife-throwing fight because two parties couldn't agree on the price of a discman (they were ten kuai from each other, and neither would budge)?

Quite materialistic maybe, but not litigious (comparatively).
