Poster for "The Scollies" scholarship banquet for animation. Pretty simple to make, mostly gradients. The poster is 7 feet tall. It's still missing event information at the bottom, as this is my rough draft. But I really like it so far.

Their logo is "Scollie Ship." Gods, I wanted to shoot them. Who came up with that? (where's my vomit smiley.)

Anyway, any sci-fi fans out there can guess where the design came from.

I think you meant to type this:

it would be good if you could squeeze an original idea in there somewhere.

Yeah, I'm sort of confused how a futuristic cityscape (Metropolis art) has anything to do with a ship and animation. I like the gradient work and attention to deco detail, but thematically it seems to miss the mark. Still, I know these things take alot of effort, so no one is dissing your talent.

The ship is required for the "Scolly Ship." All that stuff was hand drawn on the computer (mouse drawn?) and was suppose to be a parody of the Metropolis poster.

Taking elements from other work and using it in a composition was a key part of this assignment. Half of graphic design is stealing other peoples' ideas and selling it. That's why 3/4 of the magazines out there all share a similar design format (if not identical.) That's why everyone copies Apple. Since I'm still working on a degree, eventually I'll get to the position (I hope) of being the innovator of design instead of a follower. But for now I'm still learning.

Anyway, everyone's seen the Metropolis poster whether or not they knew the name of the movie, I thought it was a great eye catcher to pull people in. Then threw in the art deco boat to match the scenery. Very 1930s. I thought it turned out pretty good for a parody. Seemed to work, everyone knows where each part came from.

The Scollies is a scholarship program for animation and video, all of which have to be done on a computer. Computer, tech, future... get it? That's why I used the Metrolpolis background. I thought it represented "the future" perfectly. Then I put the boat in because we have to have a ship to symbolize the "Scolly Ship" award. I forgot who made it, but it's a famous painting with the same style. Worked out just perfect.

Hope that makes sense.

I concur. It looks like a horror flick logo.

They actually have an official logo already. It looks like a Playschool toy boat with "Scolly" on the side. Come to think of it, I think I have to put it on there someplace. Probably in the very, very, very, down-most bottom left corner. Damn it I hate that thing.

when is it due?
In a couple weeks. I got so involved with it I finished it in about a day. I'm thinking of doing another poster that looks like a 1950s horror B movie.

The letter designs were taken directly from the Metropolis logo.

Although, I'm thinking of changing it anyway. Maybe use one of those slender, elongated deco fonts. I'll toy around with different stuff.

I get a "The image “http://olepigeon.trolans.net/scollies/scollies.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors." error in Camino dude. Is it a CMYK image saved as JPEG ? It works in Safari tough. Looks good if you ask me.

Just uploaded an RGB JPEG instead. Should work now.
