NEW YORK - The rap artist O.D.B., who lived a life as wild as his lyrics, collapsed and died inside a recording studio Saturday, his record label said. He was 35.

O.D.B. had complained of chest pains before collapsing at the Manhattan studio, according to a statement from Roc-a-Fella records.

O.D.B., also known as Ol' Dirty Bastard, Dirt McGirt or his legal name of Russell Jones, was a founding member of the hit rap group the Wu-Tang Clan in the early 1990s. With his offbeat, unorthodox delivery, he segued into a successful solo career and released several hit singles.

But he was frequently in trouble with the law, mostly for drug possession.

In February 1998, he crashed the stage at the Grammy Awards and hijacked a microphone from singer Shawn Colvin (news) as she accepted an award, apparently upset over losing the best rap album Grammy to Puff Daddy (news - web sites). He complained that he spent a lot of money for new clothes because he thought he was going to win. The rapper later apologized. Later in 1998, he was wounded in a shooting during a robbery in his apartment.

In 2001 he was sentenced to two to four years in prison for drug possession; plus two concurrent years for escaping from a rehab clinic. He was released in 2003 and immediately signed with Roc-a-Fella.

O.D.B. would have turned 36 on Monday.

Nope, but I remember at one time ODB was going to legally change his name to Baby Jesus.

This is not at all surprising.

I don't follow rap, let alone this guy, but considering how often I heard about him doing stupid things on the news and on late night talk shows, I'm surprised he lived to be 35.

Jay Leno had no problem making fun of Yasser Arafat's final days of life and death. Expect him, Letterman, Conan, Jon, and Jimmy to have a field day with this one.

Yeah, that was i 1996 or something. I think he picked up all his 13 kids in a limo, and went to the welfare office to cash out their welfare - while MTV was filming.

There's some new Wu-Tang mix tape they just released, and towards the end (track 20 or so), ODB grabs the mic and lets out some nasty cough or something. Kinda sounded like he was dying then.

His work was awesome. He was one of the only rappers that didn't care about his image. Too bad the drugs got to him...

edit: I hope they're gona release the album he was working on. I could use a little more ODB in my life.

O.D.B. = Ol' Dead Bastard.

Yah. What a shame. Whatever. At least he died doing what he loved: making crappy 'music' and getting wasted. Conrats.

Idiot.

Quality people die all the time and get little or no recoginition. People who raise kids to be good people and people who try to make the world a safer and better place. Celebs and musicians kick off and it is a loss and a tragedy. They, while entertaining, are as valuable to the world as tapeworms. Easy come, easy go. As Mr. Young said, "Better to burn out than fade away." O.D.B. won't be missed, he'll just be replaced. If you insist on idol worship, at least worship quality idols.

True enough. I'll give you points on that one. Opinion is opinion. You say quality idol. I say tapeworm. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.

There is value in entertainment. Furthermore, you seem to have a lot of negative opinions about people you don't even know. I don't disagree with your basic point, but you could've made it without being disrespectful.

Yes, I suppose I could've been a bit more sympathetic, but sententious is often more amusing than sensitive. It's that whole Apollinian/Dionysian Nietzsche thing.
