Okay, I've lived without a watch for the past 10+ years. Another thread on this site got me thinking that it's time I started to wear a watch. I have nothing against them, I just never liked how they looked on my arm.

Now I need some suggestions. What type of watches do people have? I'd like something nicer - that can be worn at work. I'm thinking of something that is over $100, but less than $500. No leather bands, something metal.

Any suggestions?

I've had a battery of Swiss Army watches and always loved them. RIght now I've got the Titanium Wenger and i love it -- takes a brutal beatiing and keeps on ticking.

I find this elegant enough. I don´t like a watch to be a perennial object.

Get a Diesel or a Fossil. They both look super cool.

There is a $20 Timex self-winding, no battery with a strap that attaches to your belt. It does't hurt your wrist, has a compass if you get lost, and lasts forever. sam

i can't stand half the watches i saw when looking for one, they all seemed to bling bling and flashy. I eventually got a Wenger that is brushed stainless, very thin and pretty light with day and date.

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!

It looks nice but can you actually tell time with it? I like a watch that actually tells the time.

it's ten to two...

is one the seconds and the other the date? or did they get cute and decide that :35 was the only time worth sharing?

Oh, and what should I be spending on a nice professional watch? I expect at least $100 - but what is reasonable? $400?

I got an ESQ square-face for about $220 (I think). I hated round watches on my arm. This one's more of a bracelet than a watch.

Mine's more or less like this, but it's a few years old and more square around the edges. Got it at diamond.com

I would not recommend a Seiko Kinetic.

Take a vacation to New York City and look for guys carrying suitcases and cardboard boxes... ask if they are selling watches... get a Rolex for $30!

Mine lasted a whole month before the gold paint rubbed off

You don't have to spend a lot. I got a Pulsar Quartz, gold/silver, at Sears ten years ago, for $300, and I still get compliments on it.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

That looks like something your grampa who was in the navy would wear.

My grandfathers were in the German Army in the first World War, and I doubt they had watches like that, then. Feel better about yourself, putting someone else's tastes down?

Wow, a watch that old would surely be an antique. I'd pay a lot of money for a watch that had that kind of dependability.

It would surely be quite the find in an antique store.

In your price range I would look at a Tissot. Had one for several years, and it was very reliable. Simple, but nice looking as well.

I upgraded a few years ago to a Rolex Sea-Dweller. A bit out of your stated price range.

.35 is the second and the 28 is the date.

if u look at most watch stores, you'll notice the hour hand is on the 2, the minute hand is on the 10 (50 minutes) and the seconds hand is on the 7 (35)

'used to work at a watch store.

Spend any reasonable amount of time in Asia and you'll forever avoid G-shocks and Rolexes.
