LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Walt Disney Studios is actively proceeding with a second sequel to Pixar Animation's "Toy Story" franchise, a move that could make it more difficult for the two companies to extend their rocky relationship.
Disney is in the process of setting up a digital animation facility in Glendale -- not far from the digs of its bitter rival DreamWorks Animation -- that will be used for the production of "Toy Story 3."
While Disney has the rights to do sequels to "Toy Story," it has held off from doing so in the past, in part in deference to Pixar CEO Steve Jobs (news - web sites) and executive VP John Lasseter, both of whom haven't wanted to lose control of the characters.

I can't wait, I hope it goes straight to VHS! I would be awesome if the animation was poor and they used people with Swedish accents to do the voices!

Oh come on... I'm sure they'll get awesome people to voices, and have real talent... or Steve will sue them for slander...

What's wrong with Disney doing sequels to Toy Story if they have the right to?

Because it will be crap? Also a little professional courtesy since Pixar made the first two films.

I don't know how much truth there is to this rumor, but I've heard that Disney plans to make Toy Story 3 and a Toy Story 4 at the same time.

Disney sux when doing animated movies or their sequels. Especially in terms of voices for the characters. If you look at some of the movies they've released under their name, the'll have a 40 yr old guy trying to do the voice of a 10 yr old child.
Disney tends to take a very popular movie and destroy it in the sequel that ultimately is released straight to video since they know it will suck @$$ and bomb in theatres.
And Eisner needs to go. I heard he had a 72% vote of non confidence (aka most people hated his ass) but since he owned the board of directors nothing happened. The sooner he is gone, the sooner Disney may stop sucking as much as it does now.

Gah. What's next? A sequel to Monsters Inc. that tackles the timely topic of job outsourcing? Finding Nemo 2, a light-hearted transgender Oedipal romp in which Dad genetically changes to Mom, and Nemo becomes the dominant mating male in the pair?
Actually, I'd go see those. They'd be more entertaining than what Disney could come up with.

Where is the timeline pic when you need it? The Disney-produced, low budget sequels to Pixar movies are old news.
Eisner's vote of no confidence was 44%. It was 72% among employee shareholders.
But, yes, Michael Eisner needs to go. He lost focus a decade ago, has hired a bunch of yes men killing off any dissent, spends a lot of money micromanaging while at the same time not giving creatives enough money to work with, has spent a lot of money on useless acquisitions just to show that he's doing big things (Fox Family, anyone?), and doesn't understand the concept of overexposure.
But he'll be gone by 2006 anyway (and likely sooner). My vote for his replacement goes to Terry Semel.

It is? I knew they had the option to do it, but that they are actually in the production of one is news to me.

Disney announced Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, and Monsters Inc. 2 shortly after talks between Mike and Steve broke off.
The article says that Toy Story 3 is in production at the studio in Glendale, which implies that Walt Disney Feature Animation, not DisneyToon Studios (formerly Walt Disney Television Animation), is making it. Perhaps this means that it won't be quite as bad as we imagine it will be.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was of poor quality or went direct to video. Not so much that disney sucks, but more to the point: "making movies high quality... original 3d animation from scratch... is what Pixar does best".
Pixar has NEVER had a bomb.
Disney's track record as of late is fair at best.

DisneyToon Studios makes the low budget sequels and movies based on TV series. (Both theatrical releases and direct to video.)
Walt Disney Feature Animation does all the expensive stuff. The only sequels it has produced (so far) are Fantasia 2000 and The Rescuers Down Under and those were by no means low budget (though The Rescuers Down Under cost less than most other movies produced by the feature animation division). Unless the Mickey Mouse featurettes and short (Mickey's Christmas Carol, The Prince and the Pauper, Runaway Brain) and three Roger Rabbit shorts count as sequels.

I think that's a major issue... It's one thing if disney had done a feature length 3D film that really swept the box office, but they haven't.
Working with a technology company like Pixar to produce movies is a good idea. Trying to compete against them while starting from scratch is almost impossible, especially if you want to retain any similarity in quality.
Pixar started off crawling (with some of their short films), then walking (first feature film), and are now in a mad dash (home run after home run) as a premier 3d studio.
To say Disney can simply catch up in a year is crazy.

The people working at Walt Disney Feature Animation have the talent to compete against Pixar. They've used plenty of 3D in their animated movies going back to The Black Cauldron in 1985.
The problem is executives who don't know what makes an animated movie good micromanaging creatives who do know how to make good animated movies.

The sad part is theyre not starting from scratch. They own the Toy Story (and ever Pixar movie franchize so far) franchise. The marketing muscle that carries with it almost guarantees a hit. The quality will definately be sub par, but they will generate substantial revenues for Disney while probably tarnishing PIXARS image with the poor quality movies.

Disney Right now reminds me of Apple during the early-mid ninties. Talented people with overall lack of direction, managment and enthuiasm(spell?).
Disney has gone from an animation studio i adored since i was a child to one i dont even bother keeping up with anymore, cause Eisner is like a friggon Nazi. hes runied Disney's image by his..."release as many movies as we can, one's gotta make some money" strategy. seems almost like a bad porno company churning out flicks by the dozen expecting to generate revenues.
They seriously need someone with better values than Eisner whos only motivation is money.
Also, that division of Disney might be great...but Toy Story THREE !! ugh...thats originality for you.

Eug, Bambi and the Great Prince and Mulan II haven't been released yet, Dumbo II was cancelled, and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins was more of an introduction to an animated TV series than a sequel - still awful, though.
And not all of them are recent. (But all of them are indeed awful.)

I assume you have young kids. Otherwise I'd have to wonder why you are watching these movies.
