OK this movie is coming out Dec. 3, and in the US it's just in LA and NYC I believe.
The initial reviews have been good, although not as good as Hero.

I wonder why such a limited release. The DVD has already been released in Asia.

I've so far just seen the beginning of the movie (on DVD). Very beautifully shot and cool CG, but I must agree, the acting isn't the greatest. It seems to be getting better reviews in North America than it has been in China. China - OK vs. North America - very good. (Hero was rated extremely well in both China and North America.)

Nope, I'm wrong. It's getting a much wider release apparently.

And it's mentioned as a Canadian December 3 release too in this Globe and Mail article.

Here is the QuickTime trailer at Apple.

Just saw this movie today.

I looooove Zhang Zi yi, and this is as good as it gets for her. This is her film. Zhang Yimou unquestionably has a thing for strong female characters, and she's as good as any ever. Have we ever seen such a delicate beauty mixed with the ability to play cold blooded killer, and have such physical/ martial arts skills? She's like a killer porcelaine doll. And the best thing about here role: She's BLIND. It's incredible.

The scenes are breathtaking in their composition and beauty. The colors are out of this world. There's a scene in the beginning, that is so rich in color, I thought I was having an acid flashback. My girlfriend says to me afterwards "It's like every scen was a painting or a poem".

As for the martial arts, not bad, actually there's not so much wire fu, and that's a good thing. There's a scene in a bamboo forest that's as beautiful as anything of that genre ever. So much more elegant than Crouching Tiger, IMO.

But I have a couple issues with the plot, but as usual with Zhang Yimou's films, I'm always uncertain if it's me missing something in the translation or what. But things fealt...missing. The ending was even rather disappointing, although I won't spoil it. It's still stunningly beautiful to look at. I suppose I came away expecting one more amazing fight/battle scenes.

So verdict: excellent, thumbs up and all that.

Zhang Ziyi's tha bomb, cool fight scenes, not too much wire fu but but but... not happy with the ending, kinda sappy at times.

Somebody gave me one of those Chinese bootlegs, but I didn't bother with it because like most bootlegs it's crap quality. I just ordered the DVD from overseas, and/or will see it in the theatres on Dec. 3.

Yeah, the reviews in the west have been positive, but many mention that the plot isn't the best. Still, RT has it at 86% (25/29) at the moment.

Hey the new Chucky movie was really funny. I don't like the other ones but this one was cool as Tilly just made fat jokes about herself the whole time.

As a general rule, anything that starts with "house of" usually sucks.

see: house of a thousand corpses, house of the dead. etc.

Ah but in France it's called: le secret des poignards volants, so it doesn't count then does it.

I liked the House of Sand and Fog, although it was depressing as sh*t.

But this film, flying daggers, is cool. I need you folks to see it so I can work some stuff out.

Saw it at the London Film Festival, it was very good. Very different from Hero. I thought Hero was marginally better, but a lot of my mates disagreed and said you can't compare them.

Yeah I want to see Seed of Chucky. The quote in the Globe and Mail was from Tilly: "I was nominated for an Oscar and now I'm fscking a puppet." Apparently, it also has the strangest puppet sex ever made. The previous title belonged to Team America: World Police.

But this wasn't actually called 'House of Flying Daggers', it was called 十面埋伏 (shi mian mai fu, Ambush From 10 Sides (or something like that)).

I saw it when I was in China this summer. It was an incredibly pretty film, the cinematography was just amazing. The plot was a little confusing with my limited command of mandarin, but once I had it explained to me more fully it seemed like a pretty good movie (all my Chinese friends liked it). I definitely want to see it again with subtitles.

'Ambush on all sides' sounds a little better... 'House of Flying Daggers', if directly translated, would be something like 飞刀之屋 (fei dao zhi wu).

Although I like one of my classmates from last year's translation of 十面埋伏 better: "Ten faces burying Mr. Fu" (Mr. Fu was one of our teachers)

I have now purchased the (real) region 3 dual-layer DVD of House of Flying Daggers, but it's sitting on my table unwatched. I wanted to see it in the theatre on Friday. I dunno where in Toronto it's gonna be playing though.

Here is the new 2 minute English language trailer at Apple.com.

I'm not saying its better. And yes, it is a different movie. I'm just saying I enjoyed Hero which also features a certain hot Chinese babe. I've yet to see HOUSE, but I have heard good reviews here in japan.

oooo, that looks brilliant, want to see it now.

On a different note, I highly recommend a couple of new S. Korean films that I just saw, 'Tale of Two Sisters, and 'R Point'. Both excellent.

'Tale of Two Sisters' is okay, if somewhat strange... haven't seen the other one. Just note that ToTS is launched as a super-scary horror movie, which it is not. It's more like a psychological mystery-thriller-thingy.

Yeah, it kinda reminded me of 'The Others'. Was interesting, and quite atmospheric. Check out, 'R Point', I need to watch it again to take it all in.

Bah, I didn't need to see the trailer. An epic Zhang Yimou with fighting scenes starring the lovely Zhang ZiYi? Once I saw the poster that was it.

But that trailer gives some stuff away. Not good!

So it opened today... but only in the US. It's gonna be a couple of weeks until it opens in Canada.

Anyways, the reviews are as expected: Mostly positive, but not as good as Hero. Great action scenes, but other scenes too melodramatic.

BTW, the new House of Flying Daggers trailer is now at the iTMS too.

So I couldn't wait any longer and watched the DVD.

Somewhat of a disappointment.

The action scenes in the first half were awesome. The second half was quite irritating. Very heavy on the melodrama, with little action, and the little action there was wasn't of the same calibre of the first half. The parts of the story which I did like didn't seem to be well executed unfortunately. It's really too bad.

6.5/10

Zhang Yimou's Hero is a MUCH superior film.

Does anyone actually call her Ziyi Zhang??? Sounds extremely backwards..
USA Today did. Arrgggh!

they were demonstrating h264 at the tiger setups at macworld. 23inch HD cinema displays running that ... I was trying my damndest to find a pixel or grainyness .. blocks .. something.

It was SHARP. I woulda loved a 20inch, but if anything makes me part that kinda money, it'd be a 23inch HD display.

then again .. not like i'm going to part with that kinda money
