she's right you know ... same with cows ... turkeys (turkey day's coming up ..) .. and of course .. that chicken in your sig doesnt wanna head to the slaughterhouse .. but as long as the ones in the supermarkets dont have their heads, feathers, arent moving .. no feet ... people tend to find it more palatable.
i live in san francisco. chinese people arent wussy like most caucasians. they buy fish, frogs, chickens LIVE .. and slaughter it themselves ... they really like freshness ... but when tourists go through chinatown they get all disgusted... what's the difference between doing it yourself for freshness and some machine at a plant slaughtering and steam blasting the feathers off the carcasses?
anyways .. i'm not going to get into the whole "veggies scream when you cook 'em" bit .. but yeah .. it's a moral decision that many of us are ok with .. we just dont like being reminded of the cruelty we cause.
and yes i've known chicken ranchers? ... up around the modesto area i think ... man cruel stuff happens to them chickens when i was there. peta has a film called "meet your meat" .. you guys should all check it out. after watching it, i'm still eating meat... it's just good to know how disturbing it really is...

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Yeah, and I buy potato chips because I can't stand the slaughter of potatoes.

I think people like to confuse physical pain with emotional pain. The worst thing about us feeling pain is the memory of that pain, combined with the memory of every other kind of pain we've felt, and then combined with the fear of more pain. This is emotional pain. It's all about memory.
So do fish have memory?
Nope. In fact, I always liked to think that being a fish would be kind of cool. Everything's new. Just think about, swimming around in your little tank.
"Hey, a castle! Hey look, a castle! Wow, a castle! Hey, look at that castle! Boy howdy, sure wasn't expecting a castle to pop up there! Hey, a castle!..."

Funny you should mention that.
I remember being out fishing one day and caught the same damned bass 4 times (was too small so I kept throwing it back).
(Stupid fish after I've already caught it 3 times): "WOW, that sure looks tasty! Can't remember when I've ever seen anything that looks that good!"

Plants don't scream -- but mushrooms do!
When you sauté sliced mushrooms with only a bit of fat, they squeak in the pan. It's most unnerving to kitchen visitors who've never cooked mushrooms; they think you've got live mice in the pan or something!
