Pffft, IBM is a joke. That thinkpad design has got to be 4 years old, and so are all their PC designs. Surprise...

I have a 600E that is still going strong and I don't think the design is really out dated (haven't seen the new ones) but mine is simple and square however not elegant and square like Apple's

What does that have to do with the quality of their machines?
I personally think IBM makes the best notebooks on the market, but that's just me.

If i were to recommend a PC laptop to anyone, it would either be an IBM or a Toshiba.

I'd take the Toshiba, bad experiences with IBM. I have also had bad experiences with Toshiba. A laptop that had some serious keyboard problems out of the box, and bad service (when returned to us, problem not fixed and sound card knocked out of place) but for quality of everything else, Toshiba, definetly.

I hear less horror stories from people with IBMs than I hear from people with any other brand of portable, including Apple.
If I were to buy a notebook again, I honestly think it would be a ThinkPad, not a PowerBook. IBM just seems to be holding themselves to a much higher manufacturing standard than anybody else in the industry.
I also see nothing special about Toshibas anymore. A few years ago they stood out a bit, but Toshiba seems to be allowing the quality of their notebooks to slip recently. I'd go as far as to say that their lower end notebooks are downright trashy.

Maybe you hear less stories, because the people are DEAD.

If I HAD to buy a PC, it would be an IBM ThinkPad. My mother has a high end ThinkPad (don't know the type exactly) but it's a really cool machine. Faster, quieter, thinner and lighter than my TiBook. More expensive too.. She never had any problems with it. She does have en entire IT department that keeps an eye on it tough (she works for IBM).

A lot. If they don't want to make the outside attractive and up to date as well as competitive, it doesnt say much for them.

Thinkpads are overpriced compared to many other notebooks, including the Powerbook. Alas, I could afford neither one. I had to replace my aging G3 Powerbook with a Dell Inspiron 8600. It's been great so far. No virus screwups or anything. But if I could, I'd sell it and buy a Powerbook. OS X is still way far better than XP.

I only have good experiences with IBM Thinkpads. When I bought my windows-laptop, i could not afford the thinkpad model that I wanted, so i got a Dell... And that was the biggest mistake I did. Haven't had anything but problems, and a lot of my classmates share that experience...

IBM, Toshiba, ECS, Apple laptops are built by the same company.

At the risk of sounding like somebody with no life (too late): I pretty much live on computer messages boards, of all varities. You read, hear and participate in a lot of conversations about things such as notebook comparisons. You pick up on a lot after you've been doing it for five years.
I also worked in a repair shop a few years back as a summer job. IBM's notebooks made up the least of our visitors. And they were only one time offenders.

Built to **** Up? No that would be apple's laptops.
Since the day of the Pismo, I haven't seen nearly as many 'oldschool' tibook owners as I have g3 owners, most early tibook owners are either itching to get rid of their tibook, or have a broken/ruined tibook.
When I was 10, my dad got me what was then a 4 year old thinkpad, that computer lasted me.. and STILL works, with all it's original parts. No I wasn't taking "really good care of it", I was taking the best care of it I could, for my age. In the 7+ years I've had it, that thing's met with the floor more times than I care to remember (granted that wasn't any time recent), and it still works great.
Of course, it's worn out. The keyboard only partially works and the hinges on the screen internally disintegrated years ago, but I've heard of people here who literally PAMPER (read, treat their computer better than themselves) end up with broken powerbooks, what the hell does apple make those things out of, paper?!
Which is too bad. I'd *LOVE* to have one, and as of yet, maybe these people *WEREN'T* taking care of their laptops all too well, I wouldn't be too terribly surprised but ask a tibook owner how much of their paint is still on their laptop, ask an albook owner if their laptop has any dents of if thescreen half is bent. I'm sure you'll get more saying yes than no.
The only reason thinkpads get beaten on is (and if you look at ebay), a LOT of them are off-lease, those things are bought by all kinds of companies, and used quite demandingly. Personally, I would reccommend them above all other PC laptops, sure they might not be the strongest or anything, but they're a damn good compromise.
Now, you've heard me say what I had to say about the powerbook, that's what I've heard! I haven't owned a recent one yet (my newest is a 180c, which someone gave me recently) -- granted it still works perfectly, it weighs a ton.
Eventually, I'll probably give apple's laptops a try, to gauge whether these things really DO happen that often, and I'm sure I'll get flack if it does, but just saying and calling a laptop crap, built to **** up, etc, because it's IBM, is something only an idiot does.
So anyway, this is one IBM video, for what, 20 mac bashing videos I've seen in the past few years? You've got a long way to go See, people usually just don't like things because it's not what they have. Many of us mac users encounter this on other forums and sometimes have to defend our choices/opinions because of idiots who see an apple laptop., realize it doesn't look like their dell laptop, and then bitch about how apple sucks. Don't follow this same idiotic trend.

Hey, I've got a Pismo which must be somewhere between 4-5 years old by now, and it works like a charm.

Exactly! I think there's more pismo users than there are early tibook users (sorry if I wasn't clear enough). Seems the quality of apple's portables took a dive since then.

But what your not taking into account is that IBM has a great service system, most ppl send there IBMs back to IBM for repairs which is why you wouldnt see alot of them. I run a computer company and ive come across a few problem IBMs, they almost always still have warranty left and end up sending them to IBM for repair.
