Actually, the story was that this was a sort of sexual russian roulette, not a glorification of HIV which would be truly moronic (not that these sort of things weren't already). Since I only heard this story on the radio a couple of years ago I can't find any links. I dismiss this as an isolated incident at worst or an urban legend at best.

I have heard this too. I will try to conjure up a link. An episode of Queer as Folk was about this. Basically the gay man felt "liberated" because then he wouldn't have to worry about being safe all the time and wondering when he would get it. He was convinced all gay men would eventually and wanted to get it over with. The parties are basically a guy coming and having sex with a bunch of HIV+ guys in the same night, almost guaranteeing that he will get it. It is true, there are some moronic people out there (both gay and straight)that call themselves 'giftgivers' and 'bugcatchers' and seek to give or recieve HIV infections.

Now on the multiple HIV strain front... It has been proven (more like common sense) that this causes you to acquire AIDS much quicker, as both strains are killing your T-Cells.
