First, the Cable would go out about twice a week, as with the TV. The TV would fuzz out and the internet connection would drop. Plus, when playing CounterStrike, I'd rarely get under a 70ms ping. Seems pretty damn crappy for "broadband."

Anyway, just got DSL installed. Ordered the Pro package for $37/month, a full $20 cheaper than my Cable access AND it included normal phone service with it. 3 Mbit down, 768 Kbit up. The upstream is a 384 Kbit faster than my Cable connection.

Suffice it to say, I now get 15 to 20 ms pings on CounterSrike.

Makes me wonder why the HELL did I get cable in the first place? DSL is so much better.

Only downside is that the stupid installer to set up my account "required" Internet Explorer and it wouldn't let me register my account without it. Argh. They need to update that. Only after I got the DSL working did I find tutorials on how to set up your DSL connection without the installer, and without Internet Explorer.

First of all, you have aDSL, not DSL.

Your story is pretty funny though, because I had aDSL some years ago, when it was the only option available. After I got Cable, I chucked the aDSL, because it was so damn horrible, and it would constantly go out, and it went through crappy phonelines.

The cable I have now, is way faster, more stable, and I will never ever use aDSL again, ever again !

Alot of it depends where you live. Just because your cable sucked, does not mean all cable sucks. You obviously live somewhere with a crappy, incompetant cable provider. aDSL is ancient already.

I have DSL & ADSL. DSL is a generic terminology for Digital Subscriber Line. You're thinking of SDSL as oppose to ADSL, in which case you would be right. But both SDSL and ADSL are types of DSL.

Thanks for playing. You can get the home edition on your way out.

Funny that we have nearly identical stories, but with the opposite products.

Comcast is the crappy cable provider. Whenever we had problems their answer was "must be something on your end."

I had 1Mbit ADSL for a while. Then I got cable internet to try it out. Download was same speed, 70K/s, upload was twice as fast, 14K/s. Then the cable got faster over the next year, maxing out around 200K/s down. Then I upgraded to 5Mbit and I've never been happier.

So, YMMV, as with everything technological. I had the ADSL for 2 years before the cable companies could even install in my part of town.

I think it also has to do heavily with your area. I'm really close the C/O for DSL, so I could get the 3000/768 line. But Comcast only offers a 3000/256 line, and it's shared with my neighbours. It got pretty damn slow at times. Would only get maybe 15K/sec off the Cable. Only gettin 150 out of 3000 is pretty damn pathetic.

Oh, for sure. The first place I had the 1MBit ADSL I could max it out in both directions, but when I moved the d/l speed dropped to 70K. Like I said, the weird thing was the cable got faster and faster over the course of a year, which is pretty in my book.

Those OSX updates come fast and furious from Apple now.

I've been waiting on DSL to be installed at my house for 24 days now. Probably wont happen for another 5. Verizon has lied to me 3 times (& they admited it!). But I have no choice.

good times......

My ADSL has been incredible since it first launched 5 years ago. At first it just used DHCP servers and people would enter a manual address and kill your connection. That wasn't good, but after a while they introduced PPPoE which made you have to install 3rd party software but the problems seemed to go away. I just got a router and got around that software.

My speeds NEVER go down no matter the time of day, it is always 3mb.

I get perhaps ONE outage a year that lasts a few hours late at night but that is it for problems.

Uh oh, Verizon (or bellatlantic as it was known before) is the crap adsl I had before. We don't live in the same city, so maybe you're lucky. The crap adsl also came with a crap mac program called macpoet, I don't know if one still has to use that to use dsl.

I would never leave cable, because down here, it's MUCH faster than ADSL (ADSL max speed is 1.5mbit/256, Cable is 10mbit/128), and I haven't had any downtime for a few months anyway.

It's got a 12GB monthly download cap, but that's comfortable for me. $64.95 AUD I pay a month (I think at current rates that's around 50 USD).

I had 10Mbit cable when I was living in Colorado. Yeah, THAT was very nice. I pulled 700K to 800K/sec (that's BYTES) on a regular basis. But in California it's only 3Mbit, and that was only recently. It used to be just 1.5Mbit.
