So, the Canadian dollar has gone up to $0.84, but the prices of Apple products in Canada haven't dropped accordingly.
For instance, the iPod Photo sells for $499 US. With the current exchange rate it should be $589 CAD (roughly). However, it's selling in Canada for $679, including the $25 copyright levy. So, it's at least $50 more than it should be.
The base 17" iMac G5 should be roughly $1550 in Canada. Instead, it's $1750.
This sucks totally. Given the high cost of Mac ownership in Canada, they should at least let us benefit from the much improved exchange rate.

Yes Apple needs to reflect the prices for the poor US dollar right now.
As for the iPods I think it also has that tax on it.

I phoned Apple Canada and politely complained about their pricing. Even though they said they are not going to lower their prices, I encourage all Canadians reading this thread to phone Apple Canada and complain. Maybe they'll listen.

Apple sets prices when the machines are updated, and sometimes in the interim. I don't think they'll adjust prices soon though, since it's Xmas and everything is already selling well.
Also, components may become more expensive for Apple, esp. if they're not from China. So, while Canadian prices might drop at the next update, they might not drop as much as one might hope, and US prices might increase too.
Rumour also suggest that China may also stop pegging it's Yuan to the US dollar. If that happens, even components from China will become more expensive for Apple too.
This sucks totally. Given the high cost of Mac ownership in Canada, they should at least let us benefit from the much improved exchange rate.
Besides initial price, how is owning a Mac more expensive in Canada?

When you ship it in you get taxed so you really don't save much.

That's what I mean. We get hit when we buy a new Mac. That extra $250 that Apple is pocketing on the base iMac could be spent on more RAM or software which would benefit the retailer. Instead, a buyer has less money to spend on software or peripherals, so the retailer suffers at Apple's expense.
When the Canadian dollar drops, Apple Canada's prices go up, but they don't seem to go down when the Canadian dollar rises. Apple Canada's pricing should be in line with the exchange rate. I could handle a $50 discrepancy on the new iMac, but $250 discrepancy is outrageous, IMO.
Perhaps we'll see improved pricing on new products in the new year.

Doesn't Apple say they will match prices of retailers? Don't recall.

Here's one theory that hasn't been mentioned so far.
It's your governments fault. The huge import duty must be paid, regardless if it's by you or by Apple. Blame your govt for the rates. And then there's sales tax on top of that again I'm sure.
Now if the Canadian socialists are pocketing good money on every single Mac sold, then why blame Apple for higher prices in your country ?
So, no matter how accurate or not the exchange rate figures are, there will be a surcharge on your Mac, 'cause your govt is taking the money as an import fee.
Makes sense to me.

Too bad your theory is wrong. There is no tariff/duty on US computers sold in Canada. There is sales tax, but sales tax is not included in prices at the Canadian Apple Store.

I thought computer equipment and electronics were exempt from tariffs because of NAFTA and/or the US/Canada Free-Trade Agreement.

I don't know how the Canadian system works, and that was just a theory, but some Canadian on here should know the answer to that.
It makes sense that there are import duties on certain items, and when people from Europe or Australia or Canada complain about Apple's higher prices, do they ever think that it could be because of the tariffs/import fees that are set in place by their own govts ?

Please refrain from your Canadian zenophobia. You know nothing of Canada and your bigotry is nauseating. In other words keep your politics and bigotry bulsh!t in the pol lounge where the dregs of society hang out. They will revel in your bullsh!t.
Cool it. You go on and on and on...damn near in every thread no matter what the thread is about.
It's fu¿king sickening.

That was no derailment at all. It's a totally legit theory, and even if it doesn't apply to Canada, it does apply to many other countries I am sure, and it explains partly why Apple product is higher in those regions.

Well, until you start jabbering about politics (especially other countries politics) I'm actually quite interested in what you have to say. You're not a troll or a moron and are interestingly intelligent...just not in politics. And if you kept it in the pol lounge and out here to a minimum (and others too) we could argue about other mundane things here.
Be interested about where people live and don't use it as tool to antagonize them. I know it's only probably because of SWG getting under your skin, but it effects everyone everywhere.
Yes people give the US a punch-up once in a while but that is because they are the big guys in the neighborhood and can take a ribbing.
And even SWG can get the grey matter molecules banging around, he certainly stirs up yours.
and on topic...
It's probably US prices will go up because of the weak US dollar and the euro becoming the currency of choice for international trade. The Canadian dollar isn't actually going up, it's the US dollar going down that makes it appear that way.

Apple manages to squeeze every extra cent out of Canadians that they can get away with. This is nothing new; they have done this for as long as I can remember and it will just reflect back on them in negative karma.
PacHead, you know nothing of Canada, so keep your theories to yourself. No one here is interested in them.

I just got a 4G 20gb iPod. Total cost in Canada was $493 after taxes. Becuase my dad was heading down to the USA for business, I got him to pick me up one for $382.50 after taxes and currency conversion. I like Apple, but I don't love them enough to give them $110 of my hard earned money.

I'll make you deal, if not one single Canadian ever mentions the USA again on this forum, then I won't mention a word about Canada either. Otherwise, I'll say what I please, free speech and all you know.
Anyhow, my theory is likely true regarding other places, so there.

Canadians can generally talk about US politics because we know a fair bit about them. Something about our major trade partner, being massively affected by your economy, being next-door to the world's foremost superpower, etc. etc....
When you have an election, our newspapers are chock-full of stories about it for months beforehand. We sit down and watch TV the night of to see who's winning, and read the in-depth analyses of the result for a week afterwards.
I would bet a fair amount of money – hey, I'll go out on a limb here and bet every cent I have – that our federal election doesn't have quite the same impact south of the border. In fact, I'd bet that selfsame money on the fact that the average Canadian knows an order of magnitude more about US politics than an average American citizen knows about the Canadian political scene.
Hence, why some of us Canucks get a little amused when you, for example, call our government "socialist." Socialist?! Canada?! Methinks you need to educate yourself a little on the definition, good buddy. We might be "socialist" in the fact that we are "more socialist than US Republicans," but if you think that constitutes a "socialist" government then your ignorance is painfully apparent.

And on that note, sorry for bringing politics into the discussion. Back to the Political Forum with ye, filthy scum!
Yeah, I've been complaining about this for quite some time now. As has been mentioned, Apple's prices quickly reflected the downward spiral of our dollar a few years back and rose accordingly; however, they haven't gotten any cheaper as a result of our recent dollar climb. There doesn't seem to be any reason for this other than the fact that they're obviously making far better money off the deal with Canadian product.
Unfortunately our duty patrol has just tightened up it's regulations considerably, and you can no longer sneak a "gift" across the border and get away without paying. Certainly hurts anyone on eBay...

Apple is a US company. It reports in US dollars. Essentially, it cares for only US dollars. Hence, Apple, outside of the US, shifts foreign exchange risk to the consumer. It's not a big surprise; most companies do this.
Apple will realign its prices eventually. They did it not too long ago (a year or so, I think) when the US dollar started its fall. Anyway, it's not like you're buying a new computer every week.

This sucks totally. Given the high cost of Mac ownership in Canada, they should at least let us benefit from the much improved exchange rate.
There is more then just straight conversion... How much are the import duties, fuel costs of shipping here, proccessing, local distribution network, Apple Canada costs, future support costs, take everything into account there might be a reason its higher. I dont think its about ripping ppl off, as any business im sure they look at there costs, margins and price according to business figures.

Duties are not who sells it, but where it ships from. Apple Computers ship from Asia. I build PCs for a living and I had to pay duties every time I shipped them to the US because it was built in Canada, not made in Canada. All the parts where made in Asia so it didn't count as Canadian.

Brian says (9:16 AM): I was looking at houses in Ottawa... I actually have a temptation in me to move
Jeff ******* says (9:19 AM): Eww, Ottawa is gross. It's infested with politicians, and presently, 1 Harper as well.

Let's not make blanket statements next time...I sure as hell didn't vote liberal. They're taking too much of my cash.
And were's all that surplus money??!? ugh..
I live in Winnipeg... what farm exactly do I live on?
And your stupid province for the most part voted bloody liberal. Granted my riding ended up NDP but that's at least understandable since our MP doesn't suck either way and fights for worker's rights. That said I voted Conservative.

Duties are not who sells it, but where it ships from. Apple Computers ship from Asia. I build PCs for a living and I had to pay duties every time I shipped them to the US because it was built in Canada, not made in Canada. All the parts where made in Asia so it didn't count as Canadian.
There are no additional duties on Apple computers, even when they're shipped from Asia.

Amusingly ironic post, but nonetheless... WRONG FORUM.

I live in the Dominion of Ontario, and I buy all of my Apple products in the US. Never been taxed once. Yay team.

Word. Most American's can't comprehend the fact that Canadians even know anything about the US when in reality we probably know more about US history and current events than they do. Many Americans just care about their own country and don't learn anything about anything outside their little world which is sad.
When I call US call centres most of them have no clue what "Toronto, Ontario" is. I always get ask what state Toronto Ontario is in. Also many have problems with Postal codes. I clearly gave my postal code over the phone and they kept asking me for a ZIP code, I told him a Postal code is a zip code. He then started to talk to me like I was an idiot telling me that I needed to give him a series of numbers like 90210 to so he could ship it to me.

Not as sad as your narrow minded view of Americans.
Did an American kick your butt on a playground one day or something?
