I was reading that article about people complaining about advertising that looked like graffiti In Singapore.

I am a graphic designer and consider myself mildly "creative". Yet I am very against vandalism as in spray painted graffiti. I see a decent amount in NY and I don't like it at all. I know the 80s movement of this was cool and everything but I think it sucks.

I would really want a better way to penalize known offenders. I think that since the crime is not inherently dangerous I think alternate ways of punishment should be used. Such as a temporary Henna tattoo on the face of the offender saying something like "CONVICTED OF VANDALISM". Or perhaps "CONVICTED OF VANDALISM" can be painted on the house of the individual by the offender and taped and aired on the internet and via a public TV access show. Or perhaps a "CONVICTED OF VANDALISM" sandwich sign that the individual has to wear on the subway line they vandalized.

That guy that got flogged in Singapore - YOU DESERVE IT. I really want to know how would he like it if somebody vandalized his car.

Well, I'm in Singapore right now and I've yet to see or hear about the signboards other than that NBA story (and I'm a graphic designer and journalist).
It was a little funny to hear. Singapore is clean though not squeeky. And I'm not sure how much of it is basketball crazy. I think China is more in that realm.
Oh, and Michael Fay was caned, not flogged. And while I was still a student in the US at the time, I think he got what he deserved. He was a punk and caused a great deal of damage by deliberate action.

what now, is it cool or does it suck? i'm confused.

i have always liked 'graffiti' and hip hop culture, but i think 'taggers' suck. as with all forms of 'art' there is good and there is bad.

as far as singapore and its laws are concered, BLOW ME! they're never going to see a cent of my tourist funds, that's for damn sure.

You realize that while Playboy is not allowed, prostitution is legal? Despite the heavy-handed censorship that can take place, it can be a fun place. And it's clean, but not squeeky clean.

If you're going to base tourist money on that article alone, you're a fool.

I know that in pop culture, it is regarded as "cool" and as a icon of non-conformity and rebellion among youth at that time. I like what it stands for, I would not like it if taggers came to my house and tagged my property up. Since it cost my city money, and since I have grown up into a tax paying adult... they suck.

As for the actual "art pieces" of graffit? I think they are very amusing and take skill. I would like it better if they spray painted up their own house or apartments or clothes.

There is zero graphiti in China, perhaps the walls are never up long enough for someone to bother. I suspect you would get a few months in a re-education camp if you were caught.
