Sorry if I'm not supposed to post this here but I'm desperate and out of other options. I need a 5 page website for my office. No garbage. I'm assuming 99% of it is going to be text. I've seen a couple things online I like, but most of what I've seen is horrible. I have been trying to get this done myself for the past 2 years (between my graphics designer girlfriend and my bro who is a Linux junkie), but I still don't have anything more than a jpg (which I created) which I am not really in love with. I am really frustrated.
I need it done RIGHT so that it looks good, loads fast, and has all the appropriate meta tags, etc., so that search engines find and like it (I have a list of the words, and all text, etc.). No Flash b/c my clients typically don't have computers - or internet connections - that are fast enough to handle sites like that.
Thanks all.

hmm ... that's rather vague. let's assume you're serious* about this ...
- what industry do you work in?
- what's the purpose of the site (brochure, branding, support etc.)?
- how is the site supposed to help your business (from your pov)?
- who's the target audience (business to consumer, business to business)?
- what's your favorite example site? why?
* - "serious" as in: you don't expect someone to do this for free - because you always get what you pay for. no excetion to that rule.

Ahh, good point. Yes, I am serious* about it. Can I get some input from either designers OR lay people here re: how much this should cost? I just opened my own solo practice, so need to make a good impression but I don't have thousands to blow on crap like the large offices I've been associated with in the past. Re: designers, should we talk via private messaging?

There are some things I absolutely HATE about each, but these are the best that I've seen in this 'industry'. For example, the second one is visually appealling until you click a link and then all hell breaks loose.
* but like most people paying I want the most bang for my buck
