I have Cable Modem now, it is very fast.
i love it.
anyway, we had DSL, SBC to be exact. We would restart the modem every 3 days due to it just slowing to a hault.
Now i have heard that if i switch to say Verizon DSL, SBC still OWNS the line. Does that mean that i'll still get the same crappy slowing to a hault, very slow speeds? I ask this because we are looking into getting Direct TV and getting rid of Cable all together, as $57 a MONTH just for the internet seems like alot to me.

SBC owns the lines, Verizon leases them. I have had nothing but good experience with SBC DSL so far.

By the way, I did find out that when a Cable modem (I don't know if this also applies to DSL) is about to die, the connection gets slower and slower accompanied by dropped connections. It could've been a dying DSL modem.

I guess it depends where you live, here in Southern California Verizon is the phone company, and when they upgraded the optical in our neighborhood Verizon employees did the upgrades.

By the way, we have verizon dsl and I have had only one outage and that was at 1:00am in the morning.

I've got Verizon DSL here in Hanover, NH. No outages that I've ever seen. Only problems I've had are with my router which needs restarting about once every two months. Not so bad.

i have verizon dsl in NYC and it is the main line and its great, occasionally i had 1 or 2 days in which i didnt have service (they were working on new lines or seometihng) and i believe that i did get refunded for those 2 days of no service. The customer service is great, especially with help with routers and such ... even with mac(no outsourcing). I occasionally reset my lynksys wireless router (pull out the plug for about 30secs) and if u have a pc you can set up your free msn account.

SBC DSL was notoriously unreliable for me, but it was a million times better than the alternative, dial-up. I had to endure constant outages until Adelphia mercifully offered service to our area. But now I'm seriously considering switching back to DSL, simply because my cable bill is far too high.

I switched from cable to Speakeasy OneLink DSL.

Their service has been great - SBC, the local telco, wouldn't even give us DSL. Speakeasy somehow managed to get SBC to install a brand new line to our house from somewhere down the street (something that SBC would never do for us).

The connection has been rock solid. I had one instance of downtime, which I was notified of by e-mail two days before and happened at 1:00 in the morning. The connection was up when I went to sleep, and it was back up by the time I woke up, so I didn't care.

You get eight static IPs, free web hosting, and some other stuff.

No, they didn't. I'm the insomniac dork who has nothing better to do at 1:00am than surf these forums, that is how I found out. True story.

Verizon and SureWest are running fibre everywhere and even their own lines now, but the standard copper phone lines are almost exclusively a Bell (any of them.)

My DSL is $37/month for 3m/768k. That includes basic phone service, which is required to order DSL. China and Singapore have 100Mbit/100Mbit lines. I want one of those.

I have Earthlink DSL via Covad. the lines are leased from Verizon. I've had DSL for about 2 year now. Its only been down twice. I have a wireless setup also, so it costs $60.87/mo.

Am I the only person here SBC DSL has actually been ok for?

My problem was (and still is) that the customer esrvice SUCKS ASS. SBC has two main departments, the phone company and ASI. If you call about DSL, you get transferred to the ASI, but if you're having problems with the actual line, they can't handle it, nor can they handle billing problems.

On the other hand, SBC support can't handle the DSL at all. Their solution to almost any problem is to cut service off and restart it.

Otherwise, the DSL itself is awesome. Runs at a decent speed given the overhead, I've never heard of any slowdowns either, but SBC does suck, and after this contract ends I probably won't be going with them again.

BTW, in the 3 years I"ve had it, I only recall it going down twice due to a DSL prob
