Based on the current state of things which do you like better?
Yahoo Mail Plus (Includes POP3 and 2GB storage) or GMail (now with POP3 and 1GB).
On the surface Yahoo seems more feature-rich with most everything that GMAIL has. (Even the search tools are on par now).
GMail however seems to have a spiffyer and faster web-interface.
Any thoughts?

I think that GMail sounds a lot cooler than Yahoo and also has a better interface, so because of that I use GMail. Plus it's more r33t, not as much now as it was say, 6 months ago, but still, it makes me feel important.

Don't you have to pay to get POP access with Yahoo Mail?
GMail being free (as long as someone can give you an invite - if you are one of the few who doesn't have an account, PM me and I'll send you one) gives it a distinct advantage.

Yes: GMail is free. I've paid for Yahoo since day 1 and so far have been quite pleased. (I'd like IMAP such as my .MAC account gives me, but hey, I can't beg too much.) I like how I can access it via my PDA and cell phone as well. I also like how I can pull mail from other accounts as well as change my "SENDER".
That said: The fact that GMail is FREE is quite compelling.

I use both. GMail is fast, although it can be quite annoying. Sometimes it gets stuck at the loading screen for ages. It is buggy sometimes.

You only need to type it in twice, the longer the better!

Wow, I lead a sheltered life. Never heard of GMail til now. Thanks for the 411. I'll look into it. I have had two Yahoo accounts for a couple of years and although it's not fancy, it is functional. I like that it works without my having to give it a second thought.
I had a premium Hotmail account for a year or two and I just don't like the interface as much as Yahoo's.

I've been using Gmail for my mailing list subscriptions for the past month and a bit (growing at ~1mb text per day). Seems to be OK - still a few glitches here and there. In a few months, I imagine the search will be quite useful

Hotmail's not even a consideration for me ... they are too far behind the curve IMHO ... (Hotmail always seems like an afterthought to Microsoft)

Gmail, because both it and my Yahoo accounts are low priority ones mainly used for sending stupid things back and forth when I'm at work. Plus my Yahoo one was full of spam after a few years.
Ha, though I've just realized that my main ISP's email is a Yahoo one by default, since Rogers and Yahoo teamed up a few months ago.
Gah, too many damn passwords and email accounts these days!

Very insightful observation. I never thought of it in those terms before, but now that you mention it, it seems to fit. I can very well imagine that being the case. Funny, huh!

Sorry for the silly questions but I don't get out much on the internet!
How come people are already using Gmail when isn't it still being tested? And what's a Gmail invite?

GMail is in a phase known as a "private beta". It's not open to the public, but if you get an invitation from someone who's already a member then you can open an account and use it.
Right now GMail is EXTREMELY fast. I hope it stays this fast once it's open to the public. It also offers free POP3 support, but it's a bit odd. (Example, if I reply on the web-interface then the POP3 support will download my message to my Outlook as well.) GMail takes a very very different approach to e-mail than anyone else. (There is no such thing as a "folder" for example). It's claim to fame is the ability to search all of your mail (past, present, etc.) using a google-type search engine. This is something that Yahoo has now also implemented.
Anyway: If you want an invite to try it out then PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send one along to you.

Could you open a .com account and have it forward to a .co.uk?

Unforunately I cannot use it to check mail on my Tungsten T2 because the VersaMail client that is installed on it won't support SSL for POP3. Why GMail has to be the only POP3 host in the known world that uses SSL for POP3 e-mail is beyond me. (Even if I could get it to work, I'd have to be on an outside network because the ports that GMail uses are blocked from our security policies ...) <sigh>
The ability to access my mail while roaming is a big sticking point at present.

Well after first impressions I can definitely say I like Gmail better than Hotmail.
Speed and POP access make life much better. Whether the mail management features like search and the conversation view (whatever that is like) are good I will have to see when I get more emails.
I did notice some adverts but they really were unobtrusive and only on a couple of emails. I much prefer that than having ugly footers on every email I send out.
Overall opinion at this early stage - - no problems with anything yet.

Gmail is better than yahoo and/or hotmail. But I still prefer Mail. I use gmail for non-business, non-family stuff and have it forwarded to my .Mac account. Best of both worlds.

No argument !!!
I'd rather read ads than spam those that I e-mail.
