i assume you're referring to coverage under homeowners or renters insurance. you need to carefully read the exact wording of your policy. My USAA policy required a special rider to extend to my laptop, the idea being that since it's a portable it is very often outside the boundaries of your home. Also contained in the rider, which is basically a business-class version of the personal computer one, is a higher limit since portables cost more (especially Mac portables). Also, when I purchased mine it was necessary to buy the expanded coverage to guarantee a new replacement rather than a depreciated value compensation amount.
Mine have all taken a few dives tho and may have a few dents or scratches but the deductible cost of replacing them generally exceeds what it would cost to fix it...sure you have to get a completely new one?
