Yup, his name is Logan, and he is another guy in dorm, nice guy. Anyway earlier this year I was talking to him and he'd said that he's wanted a Mac for a while but he didn't have enough money. And I was like oh come on iBooks are only 1250 with a student discount, more joking than anything. That got him thinking. Anyway he just ordered a 12 incher
He actually used my PowerBook to do it since his XP rig is uhh... well it's ethernet card blew up and... yah it's a lil crazy.
Anyway his room mate also wants to get an iMac. Add to that another guy in my dorm wants to sell his Viao to his sister and buy an iBook. I'm bringing in all kinds of Switchers.

Yup this adds to my numbers. So far...
1 700Mhz eMac when they were new
1 867Mhz 12 inch PB
1 1Ghz 12 inch PB
1 1.2 Ghz 12 inch iBook
and hopefully by the beginning of next semester another 12 inch iBook
Add to this I'm the tech support guy for all those people plus another 5 or so people on campus... I'm truly a Mac nerd... I need to get a job at an Apple store

Don't forget to also propose Linux/BSD to those who don't want to give up their x86 hardware...
I switched to Linux and Free/OpenBSD a long time ago because there wasn't much risk. I could use the same hardware and even dual-boot if I had to.
Then, as OS X and Fink got better, Macs started to appeal to my unix side and that's why I adopted a Mac in addition to my other machines. It doesn't have to be an "instead of" situation.

I would but the thing is... this is Bible College, most of our people are NOT smart enough to use Linux. I'd have to install it for em. And they'd want to use Word files with no problems. And if anything went wrong they'd be mad at me.
That said if I push em towards a Mac I don't have to worry about many problems. That said a guy in dorm had his PowerBook's Optical drive stop accepting CDs though it does DVDs so when he goes home for Christmas he's going to send it in. I feel bad for him, specially since good old Apple Canadian tech support told him that since he'd had the computer for 92 days they wouldn't help him. Which I nearly blew a gasket when I heard.

I created a new convert out of a good friend a few days ago. He's rather poor and his PII PC was running like butt. So, I gave him my G3 266 mini tower, overclocked it to 300MHz. Then added the 256MB DIMM, 40GB HDD and Sony DVD/CD-RW combo from his PC. The drive has native burn support in 9 and X, which is a big plus.
He is currently running 9.2.2 and loving it. He's going to come into a little cash by Christmas so we're going to put a G4 ZIF in there, which I am hoping to get 600MHz out of, and a Radeon PCI. Possibly a bit more RAM as well.
What's funny is that he had never used a Mac until the day that we ended up switching him. What did it was the speed at which OS 9 runs on older hardware compared to how XP ran on his PII. Plus the promise that he would be able to run OS X down the line.

Even at 600 MHz, that's just begging for an OS X install, esp. if it has a hard drive that's of reasonable speed and size.

Take the money that you would have spent on the ZIF and get him an eMac.

I'd agree, except that the ZIF only costs $200. The eMac is $800.
In truth, I might have just tried to find out what's wrong with his PII system. If it's fixable, that might have been a solution. And some of them can be upgrade on the cheap too, to something tolerable with WinXP.
Can't argue with a free 266 MHz Mac though.

I'd sooner have OS 9 over XP. That said that's a quarter of your costs!

You must have missed the part where I said he was poor. The fact that he is in awe over the speed of a machine built in 1998 pretty much sums that up.
And the ZIF is only $139, actually (I was hoping for 600MHz overclocked). With a Radeon PCI and more RAM we will end up spending less than or around $200. Where exactly is the logic in getting an eMac?
Upgrading is good, don't be afraid.

I sold an iBook today to a gentleman who was just going to use it for travel. He is currently using a Dell monster and really wanted something portable so we decided on the 12" iBook. He went out into the mall and found a student and used that kid for the student discount, it was hilarious.

A while back I started a thread because the company I work for won't support Macs and made me get a new PC. My boss however said I could do what I needed to get the job done.
About 2 weeks ago my Dell Latitude went bonkers. We have Dell Gold Service so a local vendor representing Dell came out to repair it. Needed a new motherboard and LCD screen.
While he was there he was kind of moaning about how many of these repairs he has been doing. He noticed I was using my PowerBook and asked a few questions about it. He seemed to take an interest so I showed him a few things. He hadn't really paid any attention to Apple the last several years and seemed to be impressed with everything. Didn't really push too hard because I didn't want to come off as some Apple zealot.
I mentioned that he should go check out the new Apple Store here in Kansas City.
He called me back this morning and said that he had purchased an iBook and loves it so far.

Yes according to some, this automatically means he is gay.
AHA he is gay! That's funny!
Anyhow, I've converted a few PC owners lately because of the whole adware crap.
But now they message me all the time for tech support.

It's gonna bite you in the ass when he gets a lemon in the mail. You shouldn't brag about switchers - bad karma.
