The landmark hotel, where famed wit Dorothy Parker and fellow literary lights at the Round Table imbibed, offers a $10,000 martini, complete with a loose diamond at the bottom.

You're wrong if you think you need CNN stories and SWG's posting them here for that.

Looks are skin-deep, honey - the best nose-job (or nut-job) can't change that.

Indeed.

And all I had to say was that the US didn't need obscure CNN stories to look bad in the world...

I missed the discussion boards on CNN.

Should I just take slashdot headlines like everyone else?

And how self conscious does one have to be to think this story makes the US look bad

From the article:
Today, [Dorothy] Parker's ode to the martini adorns hotel napkins: "I love a martini -- but two at the most. Three I'm under the table; Four, I'm under the host."
She was a wit, that Dorothy.

Yeah, that type of BS will always draw righteous indignation.

If I were a gad about town, this would be a cool way to propose.

But then, my name will never be Nick Charles.

What would be the difference from just buying your own diamond without a hotel mark-up and throwing it in the glass.

You just have to be damn sure they don't swallow it.

The difference would be signing the bill for that martini, and all the "prestige" and bons mots that would come from it. How many men have stuffed rings into food to surprise their girlfriend? Plenty enough. But impressing people is often an issue. To understand the difference, you have to look at a $60,000 sports car and a Kia and ask yourself if you want your spendthrift cousin to go "good choice!" or your boss to say "we're paying him too much." Which side you land on says alot about your character.
