I think I'm over and done with video games. I never had a system in college bc my roommates always had them, but I'd play GTA: Vice City and GT3 A-spec between classes and whenever I had free time to waste. (Normal college activity)
I've recently rented GTA: San Andreas and I've realized something - I could care less about it.
It's not that I don't like the game or anything, I find it entertaining but I feel useless when I'm playing because I could be doing something more productive (i.e. chasing girls, making money, working out, surfing). I'm trying to figure out whether or not I'm done with gaming. I'm going to give GT4 a shot when it comes out and then another round when PS3 is released. You guys have any remedy for my loss of interest?

Hey, I'd agree. Video Games are losing their fun. Now it's all about graphics. None of the "magic," if you will, is here anymore. Maybe the occasional game might be worth picking up.
Monitor a few franchises for any good games and totally forget about the rest of the schlock. That's what I did. Because right now, I can count the number of awesome franchises on one hand.

Clearly you haven't played Half Life 2.
But there isn't any reason to be concerned with things other than video games. Hell, I'd say you're ahead of the game (lol pun lol) and on the right track, personally.

Apart from an occasional ten-minute Tekken 3 fight with my housemates of a couple of years ago on the ol' PlayStation at home, I haven't played a video/computer game since I was about 13 or 14 or thereabouts, so I'm probably not the right person to ask.
I just thought I'd point out the irony/naïveté/right down dumbness of coming to the MacNN Lounge and asking for mental help. I mean, it is sort of like going to the nearest morgue and asking for tips on keeping fit...

Welcome to adulthood.
I took up wood working and beer brewing when I lost interest in video games about 14 years ago. Haven't looked back.
My only truly unproductive time spent is in teh forums of MacNN here. But I justify that with it is too cold and nasty outside, and when it's late at night I can't run the power tools in the workshop, and my wife is out shopping for my Christmas gift. You guessed it, power tools.
I also oil paint, travel, do restoration on our house, landscaping, photography, and lost of other stuff instead of video games. They just seemed too much oriented for the child. Maybe it was the way I was raised by my parents.

Take some guitar lessons. It's a lifelong hobby and it really works the creative side of your mind. Also relieves stress after a hard day at work.
Fortunately for me, most FPS games give me a headache before long so I can't play them much.

Kilbey: Photography would be good. I plan on getting into that when I can afford a nice camera. I guess it's time to start saving.
doubledown: I don't have a guitar personality - more electronic/lounge music kinda guy. I may try to buy my friends Technics and mixer off of him and play around with that.
Oisin: you're right about NN, but who's better than a bunch of computer dorks to help me out with a video game dillemma?

JC your lord and master liked a little wood too.
Don't know if he liked brewing beer - maybe he
liked the taste of wine more?

This change seems to indicate that you are maturing. Your activities of being more productive are a good thing.

Wow... this attempted thread derailing is actually so far-fetched and uncalled for that it made me laugh. Out loud.
That's quite something, since thread derailments rarely cause more than a cloud of annoyance in my mind, or an occasional tut of desperation to roll off my tongue.
(Hopefully, this also means that nobody will be predictable enough to take said attempted thread derailing seriously enough to make an actual thread derailing out of it, and thus nullify my little laugh.)

Whew. I was going to reply to bingo-boy. But then I read your post and sanity reared it's ugly head.
Let's get back on track shall we?

Buy as high end of camera as you can afford. Even if you don't like the hobby, you'll still be able to sell the camera and equipment for nearly as much as you paid. Maybe even look into the high end used market.

Buy a USB keyboard and open up Garage Band in iLife.

I even used to find some of your posts amusing but lately you've gone way over the edge. Now I'm just embarrassed for you and the rest of us "non-believers." Give it a rest man or the higher ups are going to ban you.

I was just about to say that So here we go: Welcome to adulthood my man.
I quit playing video games about two to three years ago, actually when I first started going to college. All of a sudden I had more important things to do and simply stopped caring. And in my free time I prefer going out with friends or outdoors activities or whatever - just no video games or computer activities in general.

I too have very little interest in games. Oh sure I'll play them but I get bored after awhile. I rarely ever finish them. My only console is an original PS1.
I'm a game reviewer to boot.

i too also thought the same thing...
a few months after i graduated fro college, something i didn't know was happening at the time was taking over for me. Adulthood and a certain level of maturity.
i'm still nowhere near true pimpin' adultness but i am happy i started caring about the right things and thinking more strategically and living life differently.
(nothing wrong with video games, adulthood is perceived uniquely among individuals)

Gotcha.
O.K., here's what you do: Buy a better Mac. One that runs the iLife suite.
Then: Buy a USB keyboard and open up Garage Band in iLife. Make music.
Or not.

While I agree with Kilbey's general comments about things to do instead of video games when you've hit puberty, this one is invalid.
Save a bit more and get a proper music set-up if you're interested in it, 'coz GarageBand truly sucks the big one.
(note that a real music setup won't require you to upgrade your Mac either - just pop a USB MIDI interface on it and there ya go. I'm still running an 8 MHz Atari ST for my second set-up)

Listen to Sherwin on this one. He knows a LOT more than I do on this subject. I was just suggesting a cheap intro into making and mixing the kind of music you like. Listen to Sherwin.

The sentiment's good, but it'll probably work out cheaper to go the "real" route if one's Mac isn't the latest model. Apple seems to have blinded quite a few people with GarageBand. OK, so it's reasonable for hobbyist level if you've already got iLife - just much better and cheaper to grab a few second-hand synths and a copy of Logic/Cubase if you're starting from scratch.
Also, if the hobby takes you (i.e. you really like it), you'll run into sort of a ceiling with GarageBand - there's only so much it can do - which will seriously limit you.
It's sorta the difference between getting a "gift pack" home-brewing kit or the proper stuff for doing it, if you get my meaning.

Oh yeah. Avoid those intro "gift pack" home-brewing kits like the plague.

The original poster said he was bored with gaming and:
...should be doing something more productive (i.e. chasing girls, making money, working out, surfing).
How serious do you think the guy is about
his thread?
chasing girls, making money, working out,

This change indicates that he no longer likes video games. It has nothing to do with being mature or not. A leisure activity does not need to be productive.
