I'm starting a Macnn Wikipedia article. If any of you want to contribute either on the Wikipedia itself if you have worked there before, or add ideas here, please go ahead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macnn

Some things I'd like to know: What was the whole deal with Macnn being shifted to another company, like back in 2000? Any extra info on that would be great.

Doesn't posting the MacNN logo there violate copyright?

How about renaming the article to the correct spelling of MacNN: MacNN. (And/or follow the wikipedia convention of using the full name (not the acronym) for the article name, and redirects from the common spellings.)

In the US at least, logos may or may not be copyrightable: it depends on the specific logo. (See here.) Plus, as is mentioned, even if it is copyrightable, it might nevertheless not infringe to use in certain ways under the right circumstances (e.g. if fair use applies).

So 90% of the MacNN forums are about the lounge. Yay, how perfect. You barely scratch on the forums that are actually helpful. Instead it's all about our pathetic pop-culture crap we have going on here. And how did ManOfSteal's catch phrase make it into that?

Hey- yeah that is the first part. With the exception of Zimphire and goricky those are just recent Loungers. What about classics like AppleProUnderwear, CaSh and Cipher? If you go back to '99 you have a pretty damn long roster. I don't even spend that much time in the Lounge anymore since it seems like there are too many unfamiliar faces. Maybe I should get reacquainted.

MacNN is a fairly large Mac news site with a rather active forum community (in existence since 1997 or so - one of the Admins knows better than I). There was an attempted sale to a 3rd party in 2000... that never panned out as a result of several factors: namely hideous redesign and the granting of Admin privileges in the MacNN forums to a suit from said company. He got rather heavy-handed, got flamed to a little smoking crisp a near-infinite number of times and consequently MacNN escaped intact.
I want to know more about this! one of the lifers, fill out the story some - namely what company, and what were the heavy handed tactics.

Absolutely. It's not in encyclopedic style, is slanderous, factually incorrect, and most decidedly not neutral.

I deleted a bunch of the trash content, and replaced a little bit with corrected info.

MacNN was sold to NewsFactor Network. NFN's owner came in, totally changed MacNN's news layout to NFN's standard crapola layout, and when people complained on the forums (and provided educated, concrete suggestions on how to fix the design), he didn't respond with reasons. Instead, when he didn't just delete what they said, he didn't just ban people, he deleted them. This did not sit well with anybody (and was done without even consulting the forum mods/admins), and we permanently lost a lot of good members back then. As an admin at the time, we were appalled at NFN's owner's insistence that we rule with a true iron fist. (To all of you who think we're strict, you shoulda seen NFN... it was insane!)

Ultimately, it became clear to NFN that the forums -- which were the main reason NFN bought MacNN -- were not going to cooperate under their rule, so negotiations began to undo the sale. In return for being un-sold, MacNN agreed to carry a NFN headline box at the bottom of the news page for one year.

We returned the forums to normal, restored the deleted users from backup, and pretty successfully recovered. MacNN has been independent ever since.

Yeah, banner revenues have dropped a lot, so we have to use more of them. And even though they let you set what kinds of things you don't want, most of the time the banner servers ignore that.

The banner ad companies suck royally.

Ok, first I want to mention to the cleanup. Much better than it was. Second, wasn't the NFN sale in 2001? I was a member at the time and, being that I joined in March 2001, and I remember it being that first spring/summer (may/june), it would be 2001.

Or was the sale orchestrated in 2000 before I was even a member and the takeover didn't actually happen until a few months into 2001?

[edit] reading through old NFN posts makes me remember just how many people used to be around here that aren't any more.

[edit2] If any one quote sums up the NFN ordeal, it would be this one:

Watch out NFN! I'm in high school and sooper dooper mad!
