Ten years ago IBM wasn't selling off its PC division in order to sell Macs to the corporate market and earn money from the G5. Not only is this 'news' great for Apple but wait until the next generations of CPUs come out like Cell. The demand for it could be tremendous. OSX will run on it, Windows won't. And IBM will be pitching Macs all over the place.

Actually, IBM + Apple wouldn't be bad, in the current context: for example, a ThinkPad-PowerBook, and similar ideal hybrids - IBM's rationality and Apple's design together. Once enemies, today friends! Sadly, if it happened, it would probably be almost only for business, and not for a more rational overall computer experience...

That's not what's going on. IBM doesn't want to build computers any longer. But they do want to sell lots of IBM CPUs. The only way they can do that is by ditching x86 and Windows and promoting the alternative running OSX or Linux on PPC970 or Power 4/5 Series to its traditional corporate clients.

If true IBM will have to start being able to meet demands sooner.

IBM will continue to sell servers, and lots of them, including x86 servers.

It's selling off the PC division because it's not hugely profitable. And it's possible it may not be a true sell off, but rather a joint venture with Lenovo, although lately it seems more likely it's a sale.

POWER4/5 does not push a lot of CPUs. It pushes a lot of support contracts, where the real money is.

IBM has no interest in selling OS X products. They are pushing AIX and Linux.

BTW, I hope you're not depending on the Reg for your stock research...

My thoughts too... The x-series is a way too good a sales line for them to drop it.

IBM would never pay the license fee required to keep developing MacOS X profitable. That's why the clones were killed in the 90s.

English must be becoming a difficult language to understand. There's no talk of clones here.

The article (or unsubstantiated speculation) you posted is vague on the subject.

I think there's a thread around here someplace about that...

Ehhh, death of Windows?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there are A LOT more computer vendors than IBM.

I think there's a decent chance we'll continue to see Apple and IBM doing joint ventures, I doubt that means IBM making Apple clones that's a bit to ironic. More likely we'd see Apple coming out with a few bMacs of sorts that Apple could sell to IBM's corporate clients.
Think some stylish black plastic macs with nicer monitors and small cases. Think cube like designs but a bit easier to upgrade. Think iPod support think all kinds of things that Apple and IBM could pull off together. Heck we could see an Apple and IBM owned joint venture kinda like Sony-Ericson or something. iBM maybe? Anyway either way we'd see some great PCs that would be geared for a special market.

Anyone interested in the PC geek perspective on the sell-off may want to look at Slashdot's Article. I am once again surprised by the nearly uniformly positive view of Apple articulated by /.ers. At most, there were only a couple of Apple-bashing posts, and those posters were shown to be obviously misinformed. And I thought one of the most insightful posts was the one that pointed out how ironic it is that Apple's computer division has outlasted IBM's.

Heh, that and the fact that "PC" as a term for Windows machines was actually shortened from "IBM PC-compatible".
