We're building the master disk image to be deployed to the labs for the 2005 semester. We put out a memo saying that we're removing Internet Explorer 5 because it serves absolutely no purpose by being on the computer.

TWO of the faculty requested that we leave it on there because they use it for developing websites...

We asked them why they need Explorer 5 (FIVE!!!) to develop websites when we have Safari and FireFox are already D/HT/X/ML, CSS, etc. compliant. "Because Netscape doesn't work with anything, we need to use Explorer."

Remind me again why you're still employed if you're still designing websites around Netscape 4.x and Explorer 5?

Argh. So we have to leave Internet Explorer 5 on the computers. I'm going to talk to my boss and see about having it removed due to security problems, seeing as how it hasn't been updated since version 5 in the first place.

It wouldn't be so much a problem if every day I didn't walk in and people are using Internet Explorer and blabbing about how much they hate Macs because they're so slow and don't even have tabbed browsing.

Simply remove it from the dock, that should help. But other than that I agree with the web designers, you always have to develop websites that will work on as many platforms as possible - and unfortunately, whatever works fine in Internet Explorer 5 for Mac OS X also works fine in Internet Explorer for Windows. Yet you cannot be sure that stuff you develop for Safari or Mozilla will display the way you want it in Internet Explorer for Windows.

Why can't those faculty members download IE5 themselves?

Oh well. The way to do this is what other people have mentioned. Leave IE in the Applications folder, but only leave Safari and Firefox in the Dock. Set the Desktop background to an instructional message that informs users to click on one of these two icons if they want to browse the Web.

It wouldn't be so much a problem if every day I didn't walk in and people are using Internet Explorer and blabbing about how much they hate Macs because they're so slow and don't even have tabbed browsing.
So does IE for Windows have tabbed browsing now or something? Or are people just getting more used to Firefox?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

No it doesn't, which is confusing to me.
