South Korea's Samsung Corporation has won the contract to build the world's tallest building, the Burj Tower in Dubai.

Samsung won the $306m(£160m) deal, after an 11-month bid process.
Only $306m? That's less than new American sports stadiums (stadia?).

Too bad about 25% of the population in that country cannot count as high as that building is in total floors. If it wasn't for the oil, they'd be contracting somebody to make mud huts.

amazing how they jumped about 1000 feet from the current tallest (taipei 101) ...

tower of babel anyone?

also .. i find it interesting ... if you read into the ammount of floorspace ...

there's a ratio between how high you build, and how much useable floorsplace and price per square foot spent for it.

anyways ... as a person who loves high rise architecture ... we are in for some interesting times. Then again ... I hear Shanghai is sinking because of the weight of all the new skyscrapers it's been putting up. =P

yes, Shanghai is sinking, but I don't think they're going to tear down skyscrapers just because of that.....

just like mitsubishi and other companies you think might be just involved in cars or electronics, samsung is a many-headed beast. http://www.shi.samsung.co.kr/eng/ is probably up to the construction.

Its getting annoying how everyone is starting to build the next "tallest building". Isn't Shanghai going to have the tallest in a few years? I heard they started planning on it right after Taipei 101 started construction...

Looks like this "title" may be an annual thing after awhile. As the planning for one starts while another is being built.

Maybe they should start with area coverage rather than height. I like to see a building 5 miles wide...

Do some research. Only 7% of the revenues for that country are from oil. Dubai and the UAE has a lot of money and only a tiny fraction is oil related.

Somebody should build the deepest underground building, now that would be an accomplishment. Wouldn't be an eyesore, would be more efficient to heat, cool and wouldn't be a terrorists target.

The UAE has an open economy with a high per capita income and a sizable annual trade surplus. Its wealth is based on oil and gas output (about 33% of GDP), and the fortunes of the economy fluctuate with the prices of those commodities.

got any links to that?

The reason I say this is, there were other TALLER versions being offered. And they were denied.

My point was, the point of the tower wasn't to be the tallest. They weren't in any race.

In this tower's case however, yes, it's purpose is to be the tallest.

That isn't the purpose of the WTC replacement.

Counting has nothing to do with reading and writing. My 3yr old can easily count to ten and can almost count to 20 and she can neither read nor write. Once she realizes that counting to 100 is simply counting to ten, ten times, she'll easily be able to count to 100. I fully believe that she will be able to count to 100 before she is able to read or write.

Insecure? No. Insecurity would be me posting negatives about other countries or a country in particular to make mine look good.

Remind you of anyone?

SWF, SWF, SWF... that is not the purpose of the building.

AGAIN there was MUCH TALLER models that were rejected.

At the time it was being thought up, it would have been the world's tallest.

That was just an afterthought.

Now this one is being built, do you think they are going to scrap the idea and make it taller?

OF COURSE NOT!

Because that isn't the purpose.

If they were in a "tallest" race, then indeed that is what would happen.

Capisca?

The funniest part of the article.

"The CN Tower in Toronto, which Canada claims as the world's tallest free-standing structure, is 1,815 feet."

I guess Canada loses too!!11~!

So aside from this American Penis Envy, this building is rather nicely designed as it looks futuristic and not just a big block.

The building has an odd looking shape. There will probably be another one taller down the road.

I wouldn't trust somebody who can't read the word "dog" or "cat" on a piece of paper, or be able to know what 2 + 2 equals, to know how to accurately count to 160.

And your 3 year old is obviously already smarter than many illiterates across the globe.
