My mac is dead during finals week. I know this is the wrong forum, but you guys are probably smarter and better to answer my post than the Mac OS X forum.
Problem: Blinking folder and question mark on startup.
Cause: Changed boot volume to dead OS 9 System folder.
Additional problem: All of my boot disks are at home and other kids with macs here have DVD disks that my g4 can't read.
FOR THE LOVE OF MAC! PLEASE HELP QUICK!

Press and hold the option key when the machine is starting up until you see the MacOS X gray screen. It'll then show you all bootable disks on the machine. Now, just pick the one you actually want.

How 'bout connecting an external firewire drive? If you have an iPod, copy an install dvd onto the ipod from a friend's mac and then boot your mac up with "T" held down.

Do *not* hold the T down - that will make your Mac act like an external drive, not boot from one. Plug the iPod in, hold down Option when you boot, and choose the iPod.
Now, if you want to connect your Mac to a friend's Mac just to get some files off of it, then connect yours to his using a firewire cable, and start it holding T down.
