Elephants do the same thing. In fact, elephants will even go back many, many years later and fondle the bones from the dead elephants. Nifty.

Thanks for the link, ThinkInsane.
It was a very moving article.

A sad but moving article. A very good thing on part of the zoo keepers for allowing the other gorillas to grieve.

i think its beautiful. other creatures not so far up the food chain seem perfectly capable of feeling and expressing these more "complex" emotions.

But you're not. You're a moonmonkey. So the question remains, what ARE you going to do?

Nowt new. I've been kept up many a night by the sound of cows mourning (i.e. yelling their heads off) the loss of one of their herd.
It's one of the reasons why I'm veggie.

Oh, gosh, you're gonna send me back into vegetarianism with a vengeance. I know how you feel.
When I was growing up on the farm we would have to (eventually) separate the cows from their calves. The calves were being sold or put in separate fields, etc.
You would not believe how hard those momma cows wanted to get back to their calves and the calves back to their momma cows. Both the mothers and the calves would moo and moo back and forth and hang their heads over the fences and strain to see each other.
No one can tell me that a cow isn't a sentient being. They are. They're way below gorillas on the consciousness scale. It makes me sad even thinking about it now.
I have a feeling that we Americans (and perhaps humans in general) are meat eaters because it is a sterile process to eat it: We go to the store and buy it. That's it. No killing or butchering is involved...no emotions are involved. If people knew more or were exposed to more experiences with respect to eating animals then they wouldn't eat it.
Interesting to note that gorillas are mostly vegetarians, also.
