Good thing that wasn't in Hawai'i. You'd have some big Polynesian guys wanting to know why you killed one of their ancestors.

Really though, that's too bad. Killing sharks is bad, they're an apex predator that has been through really rough times since at least Jaws came out. Beauty of a catch though; I'd take some pride in it if I caught it, but damn, what a waste. They should have let it go.

As far as I can remember, I've seen at least 5 sharks, 1 alligator, many
barracudas, moray eels, ... while in the water, and not one has ever come after me. That pic just really sucks.

Sweet. I'd eat that. (Wrong thread)... oops.

Nice 'fish' though.

CAPTIONS:

When I said "pets allowed, fish, small dogs, etc... the SMALL also applied to the fish as well..."

or, "Doc, what do you think is wrong with my fish? Do you think it is something he ate?"

How many of you called the number on the crain?

I thought that it looked like a shark. It certainly put up quite a fight according to the blood, sad.

looked? Past tense? What the hell else would it be?

But yes, there is a certain sadness to the great beast being slain like that, especially with the fight it put up. But it is no different from fishing the little fresh water fish we have in the lakes of Minnesota. He's just bigger.

Sharks can't breath if they don't continue to swim forward. At least, that's what my vague memory is pulling up. I'm no biologist.

i don't think there is really a "let if go" option once you get a shark on deck. i would imagine that the thing is pretty much dead by the time you want it anywhere near the deck. they could have cut the line, but what fun is that? i know that my grandfather when he was pike fishing (3 feet is a pretty big pike) would either take a small club or a .22 revolver with him to kill the fish before he had to reach into its mouth to retrieve the hook.

That is correct.

Good old Nova Scotia... Mako's passing through there are just asking to be killed, nowadays

What a disgrace... judging by the weight, that shark must be just over 11 feet, making it a pretty huge Mako. People that kill these things should be killed themselves.

I'm not entirely sure, but there's a possibility that the shark in the picture is a Longfin Mako (I can't tell from just that picture), which is a protected species, I believe. If so, this guy better get done for it. :|

Ummmm... no.

There are a few sharks that have figured out how to fan water across their gills so they can remain motionless for hours on end.

exactly what olePigeon's sig does

60% of Americans think there is an Iraqi/Al Qaeda link to September 11th.
40% of Americans think Iraq was directly responsible.
The 50% average of the two groups re-elected the lying f*cktard that started it all.

Shortfin Mako's are fished for meat, but Longfin Mako's are not. Their meat is of a low food value. Shortfin's aren't protected, but I believe Longfin's are.

In my opinion, any organism with such a low birthrate (high juvenile mortality, long incubation period, etc), should be protected. We can't wait until we notice their absence to protect them.

I take it you've never seen video of the Japanese fishing boats in "international waters" pulling in sharks like that off of long lines, cutting off their fins(the valuable part for some asian healing beliefs), then dumping the rest of the still alive shark off the side of the boat to drown because they can't swim w/out their fins.

Now I'm not a huge animal rights activist, but if you kill something, make sure you eat it all. And I'm sure some of the hunters in here would say that they've seen a buck so powerful or great or whatever that they decided not to shoot it. Same kind of thing. That huge shark could possibly make or break the species.

I'll prolly come off like a hypocrit, since I posted a pic of a barracuda(ono) that I caught in Hawaii in another thread( http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...ight=barracuda ), and love to fish; but man-eater sharks aren't the same as every other fish. They're the top of the ocean food chain. And if you ever get to come face to face w/ one, you'll understand why.

Your grandfather was smart, we did the same thing w/ the barracuda I caught, I thought it was cool as hell. Their teeth can cut through steel wire. Another thing, if you fish off a pier and catch sand sharks, turn them on their back. They go stiff and are immobilized, and you can pull the hook out of their mouth. I saw it on discovery channel and my dad freaked when I stuck my fingers in the sharks mouths to pull out the hooks when I was 15.

And yeah, shark is kind of tasty.

On my round the World trip i went to a place on the Eastern coast of Australia, a museum for a shark hunter [some bloke called Hislop].

There was a tank with a 20 foot dead Great White sharks in it, was one of the scariest things i've ever seen!! Even though it was dead, it was still very un-nerving being so close, it looked so evil.

I am totally against Shark hunting though and respect them as one of the best predators on the planet [just wouldn't ever want to see a fin coming towards me in the sea!!]

edit - found the link to the guys site

It is simple:

1.) The animals that are tasty should die and end up on my plate.

2.) The animals that I find bothersome (bats especially, ack!!) should die so that they no longer bother me.

3.) There are a few exceptions, for example, honeybees are bothersome, yet they make tasty honey that ends up on my plate. So they can live under controlled conditions.
