It seems most people on this board (and im assuming most places) have a really wide choice in music, is there a music which is common to geeks? It seems they like either metal or that shitty electronic stuff

I'd say classic rock stuff - like Queen and bad 80's would qualify as g33k.

there are almost no people like you see in "Revernge of the Nerds"

there are people who are quirky and like weird things but you can say the same for movie stars and ultra-hip people. it's just you don't know about it.

Take Paris Hilton for example. She is stupid, slutty and annoying. If she wasn't rich, famous and beautiful you wouldn't consider her cool. She'd be an average stupid, slutty, annoying girl.

what i am trying to say is define "geek" and how people use that word and then your answers will become clear on how you individually define that word.

What kind of 'geek'? Computer geek? DND/fantasy geek?

Fantasy geeks would love a lot of metal; particularly power metal, prog rock, etc. Dungeon (Aussie power metal), Blind Guardian, Amon Amarth - all incredible metal bands with geeky stuff on the brain. Lots of mythology, Dragonlance (so I'm told), and so forth. Oh, and let us not forget Star One - "Space Metal". Of that, I'm not a fan.

As for computer geeks? Well... metal, industrial, goth rock, and electronica fit the stereotype, insofar as each of those genres offers something to the ostracised antisocial geek sitting in a dark basement (keep in mind before criticising that statement that I'm operating off a stereotype, and I don't necessarily agree with what I said).

Largely, geeks seem to be far more "into" music than your regular person. Geeks are generally more intelligent than the norm, and more appreciative of "good" (often via complexity) music. This results in having tastes that are less evenly distributed over all genre's of music than the general populace (including geeks) is, as a whole. One of the genre's that happens to require a certain amount of appreciation is - again - metal. Most people that hear anything of the sort will instantly write it off as satanic, skill-less grunting and thrashing, executed messily by angry teens in a garage, without even listening to it.

When you criticise metal, Peter, I'm assuming you're criticising "metal" - not metal. You're criticising Linken Park, or Metallica, or some other rubbish.

Hmm, I'm rambling. I dunno if this post makes sense. We'll see in the morning, eh?

Now the important question: Guiness Extra Stout or Tooheys Extra Dry, this round?

Chiptunes. Nothing better than listening to recordings of a SID on an iPod. You can't get geekier than that!

Here's a short report from Arte: German, French.

I don't know if you could really define a 'geek' genre. What kinds of music would it include? Most geeks' taste in music is too eclectic to classify well.

Agreed with Cipher. The power metal dragonlance stuff, dead on. Not for me though, I tried Blind Guardian, I liked The Bard's Song, the lyrics about the "elves and dwarfs" kinda throws me off though ;-). Dunno if Ayreon counts here, they're often talking about something somewhat close, The Universal Migrator album has some decent songs ("Chaos", "The First Man on Earth").

Agreed with the computer geeks liking Metal, I know people who seem to love Linkin Park, Rammstein (some decent tunes, Amerika was funny, Sonne, Du Riechst So Gut), but I like melody. Electronica (IDM) is great, Aphex Twin, Esem, µ-Ziq, some Squarepusher, Röyksopp, Boards of Canada, Four Tet. Not sure where Industrial fits in, it doesn't seem to with the metal crowd I know.

Videogame music as well. I often listen to the Unreal Tournament soundtrack, DKC, Zelda, Punchout. Deus Ex, Max Payne....

Hopefully that helps someone, I'm always looking for great music. As said above, all that doesn't define my tastes entirely, there's great music in most genres that transcends differences in tastes. I have Ella Fitzgerald, Utada Hikaru, Zeppelin, Depeche Mode, Underworld, Brian Eno....iTunes says 808 artists, 300 genres and subgenres

it clearly doesn't hold true for self defined "geeks" at large as evidenced by this thread, but it's worth mentioning that many if not most people in the orchestras i've played in have been math or hard science people, and of course have been very into classical music. composers are geekier yet, and are typically drawn from the same orchestra group... here's my claim to entrance in that group.

my music picks would be:

js bach, played by martha argerich or glenn gould (or someone else if it isn't piano or organ <boo/hiss>), whether chorales, art of fugue, toccatas, anything
mahler, specifically symphonies 1, 2, 5, 9
mix in bartok, prokofiev, ravel, stravinsky as desired

Bad thrash, lame pop-punk, subpar Industrial metal, some nu stuff, and uh…U2…*shiver*.

I guess I'm fairly geeky. I'm not one of those "OMG I AM TEH G33K I PWN J00 ALL!" people. I like macs, I know my way around very well, and I like messing around in PS.

Here are a couple of mine:

AC/DC
Black Sabbath
Blind Guardian
Deep Purple
Demons & Wizards
Double Trouble (SRV)
Iced Earth
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Led Zeppelin
Megadeth
Metallica
Motörhead
Pantera
Rammstein
Saxon
Slayer

Most of that's metal, some thrash, some melodic speed, some NWOBHM, a little bit of power metal, and some hard rock.
Some for me, it's rock.
And please tell me you did not call metal shitty.

Alice in Chains
Anthrax
Black Crowes

The Dandy Warhols
Flogging Molly
Frank Zappa
Guns N' Roses
Jethro Tull
Jimi Hendrix
Pink Floyd

Anthrax After doing the rap to Bring the Noise, my partial liking of Anthrax was O.V.E.R.
Black Crowes
Blizzard Entertainment I hate to admit it, but I liked a couple of the background tracks, especially for the Terran and Protoss
The Dandy Warhols
Flogging Molly Um…yeah. I hate their sound.
Frank Zappa
Guns N' Roses Hmm…too much like hair metal
Jethro Tull
Jimi Hendrix Why the hell didn't I put that on my list?
Pink Floyd I never liked the feeling of being stoned when I listen to music. Black Sabbath makes me feel stoned enough
Rage Against the Machine Zach is a total Marxist
Van Halen Great guitarist, but a little too pop for me
The Who Never a big fan of their sound. Great bassist
Yes Too progressive for my tastes. Good bassist
I still like most of my original list alot. I usually go for the heavier and/or older stuff. I can't name one alt. group I like. But at least someone likes my list.

[Edit]Why the Hell did I put a second X in Saxon? And why did I switch the V with the R in Double Trouble? Damn keyboard.

"good" (often via complexity) music
I keep finding great songs with more than one beat superimposed on eachother using different instruments, like "Achilles' Last Stand" for the Zeppelin fans, some of "The Seduction of Claude Debussy" for Art of Noise. Exactly where do I find specifically "complex" music?

I'll agree that those scary Dungeons & Dragons types who listen to death metal really need some help.
Always thought of them as computer geeks growing up without computers/electronics, people with no refuge other than fantasy, the lost geeks ;-). Not saying every D&D player is like that, I enjoyed games that were based off of it.

i think techno is pretty geek.

Meh, it's listened to more by the rave crowd, it's more directly incorporated into trance and rave pop, techno is a type of dance music....though if you define it as "electronic music", then there's a whole lot of subgenres. ISTR there was a good wiki entry on it.

anyway, what's the best music genre for BGM when you program?
Ambient music. Brian Eno, Boards of Canada, some Aphex Twin, DAC Crowell ( free at magnatune.org), some Deep Forest, most of Sigur Rós (the Von album is more industrial). It literally is BGM, music you can ignore or enjoy. Electronica is less distracting since it has no lyrics. You could try music in another language, words that sound like gibberish to me don't seem to register as expressive when I'm doing something.

I don't actually know much about the band myself other than how it started, but don't forget this is a European band, the alternative sexualities are more accepted in Europe than north america. That, and they are trying to shock you....for example, "Mein Teil" off the new Reise Reise album.

Former German punks that made industrial metal.

Can we stop talking about Oliver and Till (pretending to be) doing it on a concert DVD?
Damnit, that's gonna bug me for the rest of the night.

Is that the one where they're playing live and during Bück Dich (bend down) one band member whips out his thing, which is actually a hose, and begins to hump another? Then he sprays the audience with it. And it's a hose.

They could be gay, though. I wouldn't care.

ya it was but i never saw the hose part, i'll have to go back and watch it again to re-examine it, the one i saw either cut out before the spraying or whatever.
