Man Gets 6 Months in NASA Hacking Case

"When you knock a system off line, you have to start it back up again," Nyhus said. "It's not like firing up your Macintosh (news - web sites) or your Apple where you push a button and wait six minutes for the thing to boot."

Maybe if it was Mac OS 8.1 running on a Classic II or something...

He will probably have a job in security when he gets out.

Why did he use Macintosh as an example?

Oh well. All publicity is good publicity, right?
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

I guess because that's what he uses? I reckon he chose Macs because it's either a well-known brand or just the one he prefers - it certainly seems like a good reference to me.

I know how to make it take 6 minutes!

Take all the RAM out except for 64 MB. That ought to do it...

The Monarch has a lot of extensions. (An oblique reference, yes, but if you're not watching the show you really should be.)

More than likely it is reference to the length of time required to bring their servers back online. If you can bring an entire cluster of computers online and have them operational in 6 minutes, please let me know how! IE, he thinks 6 minutes is FAST

Sometimes the power goes out.

Anyway, this really upsets me:

"Herns was ordered to pay restitution for the damage he caused and will have limited access to computers for the next three years"

Seeing that the kid is 21, he's probably over halfway done towards that CS degree. Guess he won't be completing it. Depending on the university, there are time limits on completing your degree, it's likely he could have to wait the 3 years and then START OVER.

I mean, really, he did some dumb stuff when he was in HIGH_SCHOOL, but to prevent him from pursuing a career in a field he's obviously highly talented in is moronic. Or, more to the point, the justice system is being a 'dick'.

"First, were throwing you in Federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison for 6 months. Then, we're going to force you to take a job you HATE (as a CS guy myself, if the job don't involve CS, it sucks) for 3 years + however long it takes to put yourself through the remainder of your college education."

I'm sorry, what the guy did deserves community service at the most. Prison time (good chance as a white-collar criminal you'll get AIDS, if 'Oz' is any indication of prison life) + career sabotage is uncalled for.

My dad's old 6100/60 takes that long, I guess, but that's the only example I can think of with a Mac taking that long to boot.

In reading the article, it is funny, we are saying how long 6 minutes is. The guy was using 6 minutes as a fast reference point for booting up compared to getting a whole network going again.
(I know someone already pointed this out up top, but it seemed to be ignored)
