All by album, except where I haven't loaded the whole album, and they're all in one playlist call miscellaneous. Creative, no?

Mostly by artist, though I have quite a few categories for others. Books (for audio books), Books/heard, Books/Language, George Carlin I and II for his audiobooks and concert albums, acoustic, jazzy, mixed bag, mixed bag/alternative, mixed bag/hip-hop, mixed bag/80s, mixed bag/country, chicks, buzz bands, covers, Christina vs Britney, Seattle sounds, etc. I have more than 200 playlists.

I use smart playlists synced to my iPod (criteria based on year and genre, with findable keywords added to the "Comments"(under the info) of my MP3s). They get pretty complicated, especially because I make a lot of restrictions. Generally, I use these to trim the music in my collection to that which I listen to the most (or enjoy the most). By choosing about 4 or 5 playlists, I tend to come close to the 20gb of space my iPod has.
Smart Playlists:
50's music (1950-1959: pop, rock, vocal, instrumental)
60's music (1960-1969: pop, rock, vocal, instrumental)
70's music (1970-1979: alternative and punk, pop, rock, vocal, instrumental, country)
80's music (1980-1989: alternative and punk, pop, rock, vocal)
90's music (1990-1999: alternative and punk, pop, rock, vocal)
2000's music (2000-present: alternative and punk, pop, rock, vocal)
Dreampop (1980-1999: anything I've added the comment"dreampop" to, like My Bloody Valentine and Lush)
Britpop (1970-2004: anything I've added the comment "britpop or nme" to, like the Smiths or Pulp)
Lite FM (1970-2004: pop, vocal, new age)
Classic Rock FM (1960-1996: rock)
AM Gold (1950 - 1984: pop, rock, vocal, instrumental, country)
Christmas (all holiday music)
Audiobooks
Blues and Soul (1930-1979: blues, soul)

I have about 20 more of these smart playlists. Most of them imitating radio station genres, or highlighting my collections of british music, early country and folk, funk, electronica and the blues.

I like that idea AB^2=BCxAC
The whole radio station type setup...I think I will play around and see how well that works for me.

I used to do that, but then I realized that it's a waste of time. There's no reason to make playlists for individual albums because you can just use the Browse view in iTunes and on the iPod. Playlists exist so that you can create groupings of dissimilar items. I suggest you play around with the Smart Playlist feature, because you're missing out on a lot of very cool functionality.
I have the following Smart Playlists set up:
Top 50
Top Rated
Rarely listened to
Purchase candidates
Recently played
Deletion candidates
New arrivals
Not listened to yet
Unrated
Normal playlists:
Holiday
Instrumental Jazz
High Energy Mix
Legal Songs
Sad Songs
Japanese music

I have only a couple of playlists that I listen to all the time, since that's the guaranteed listen to at work stuff. Everything else gets put into a dated playlist as I download and listen to new stuff.

Currently I only have one play list, i generally just shuffle. That said when I'm working out I normally have a few fast mixes, and a few slow down mixes. I try and alternate between em.

A driving mix I try to make every week, every time I have some spare time I add a few songs to it during the week and on Friday I have a playlist that I play while driving home from university. Mostly about 40-50 songs. The rest is filled with a random smart playlist (a ±3,4GB playlist to fill up the iPod mini from a 45GB itunes collection). For the rest I don't use playlists all that much. I can easily browse my music through artist/genre/album since my tags are all 100% complete and correct.

Sometimes I play my music by album etc, but I like it much better when I just let it shuffle between all 3000+ songs. I really like being surprized every three minutes. The only hazard is when 1/3 of an audio-book comes up, but that's what the >>l button is for. Never even tried making a playlist actually; artist and album sorting is enough when I don't want to do the full shuffle.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

You could easily create a smart playlist to include everything except your audiobooks.
