Yeah, it's legit, but it's not US currency or legal tender. It's quite the Libertarian venture.

They sell a $10 Liberty Dollar bill, backed by 1oz silver, for $10 USD.
Thing is, the current spot price for silver bullion is about $6.75 USD.

Seems like they're making a nice profit (which is their Objectivist duty), but I sent them an e-mail wondering why their asking price doesn't fluctuate like exchange rates.

Any of you guys who took economics have insight on this?

Yeah I noticed the profit they were making... It would be cool to spend $10 and get $10 in silver though. I guess this could be used as an investment deal, as long as they were worth something in the long run!

Anyone can make/print money in the US as long as someone is willing to except that as payment for the goods they are selling. Obviously, 99.99% of all stores accept the green and coin coming from our government (or credit/checks). It is just the simplicity of the government's solution as to why it has become so common.

It use to be city by city, town by town, everyone had different money. One city wouldn't take another's. There is nothing preventing this from still happening. They have legal rights to do so. However, don't except anyone to do business with you though anymore

You can't though, make/print money and pass it off as the government's (counterfeit), obviously.

Thought I would bump this....

I came aross the Liberty Dollar website while searching out dollar coins.

I'm kind of half tempted to go down and exchange 10 bucks for a 10 silver piece....just to see what the fuss is about.

anyone ever use them?

Some towns in the US still have their own money. It's a great way to keep money IN a town. You trade in your $1 for $1 of "City X" money... and basically, the money never goes away... because it can't.

It's a great idea, but I wonder how it actually works in real life.

I find US currency to be one of the more attractive... granted, the idea of having a different color for different amounts, and even different sizes seems interesting.

I'm well traveled... and I said the US currency was "of the more" not "the most" attractive. I have collected currencies from all around the world since my youth, and I'm also an amateur print historian...

Also, it's my opinion. Before ASSuming that I obviously like the currency because it's from my native country... and that I've never had the opportunity to see other currencies... consider that people have different OPINIONS regarding design.

I'd have to agree with SWG. I think U.S. Currency is some of the uggliest in the world.

I just found this really nifty webpage:

SWF, I like Canadian money a lot. It's well designed and attractive. With that said, there are a lot of Canadians who would look at a banknote they were unfamiliar with and wonder if it was legitimate. That is why U.S. currency is still in the 1930-something design; it signifies continuity with older notes and thus its own legitimacy.

Take a look at the newer bills; they are much more colorful, less stodgy and far better protected against counterfeiting than bills from just ten years ago.

I've seen some money that was, to be blunt, UGLY. And I've seen money that was attractive but tarnished, such as Honduran banknotes-they're nicely designed and have attractive illustrations, but they're all OLD. To add to that mix, when I was in Panama in the late 1980s, the paper currency WAS U.S. banknotes. Their coins were exactly like U.S. coins in size, shape, weight and material, but with their own obverse and reverse designs. It was...'interesting.'

I'd love to see some of that money, since I have never heard of town exclusive currency, at least not in the modern era. Gotta a link?

The stuff production_coordinator is talking about is specie used for barter systems. While it works, there are issues with the value assigned to the specie, managing records of transactions and (yes) paying taxes on barter income mediated through these notes. It's a great idea, but it's still (what, 20 years on?) a bit bleeding edge economically speaking.

That'd just be fun. Kinda like Uncle Scrooge.

Never really cared for the dollar coin. Just too large.

My problem with US money is that it is all the same colour. Stupid stupid stupid.

The fonts are also ugly and it has some really puzzling items on it like a Pyramid with an eye at the top? What the hell does that have to do with the US? Looks like something out of a Scientology book.

I like Canadian money, it has animals and things that have to do with out heritage.

I am really fond the the EURO, its beautiful, and shows how much potential the US Treasury could have if it didn't keep all the old farts around designing the same currency. We need to show off our heritage... kinda of like the state quarters, that was a brilliant idea!

Here is a Canadian $50 for comparison. The only other red bill was the $2 bill but they replaced it with a coin in 95 I believe. Smart move, I hated $1 and $2 bills as they cost a ton of tax dollars to replace so often. They have some really cool anti-counterfeit measures in them.

Look at the second image of the $50. Under the letter "p" is a funny looking wiggly line. At first I was like what the hell is that. When I realised that when I held it to a light some other lines on the oposite side showed through making the wiggles turn into a "50". Obviously they did this so if you can or copy it you can't easily get around it. Pretty nifty. This is on all the bills.

I still can't get over how dated that font is. For people with poor vision it is hard to even read the "50" in the corner as it is so curly and squished. The bottom right 50 even looks like a 30. The horrible colour also has no excuse.
