Shamed but not yet defeated, Sony Corp. says it can no longer sit back and watch as Apple Computer Inc. gives it an ignominious beating in the markets for portable digital audio players and online music download services.

To that end, Sony has established Connect Company, a division exclusively tasked with developing products and services to rival Apple and its immensely popular iPod players and iTunes Music Store service.

Desperation is probably the best sales tactic ever invented.

It certainly works if you want to get laid, so why not for selling cheap pieces of plastic?

A new division with a new title that is probably staffed by the same people who have failed miserably so far.

Has Sony even put forth an effort at all in this area? All they've done is continued to push their own unpopular ATRAC format, completely ignoring the MP3 behemoth until a few months ago. What do they even make? CD players, minidisc players, the PSP, various other "everything and the kitchen sink" devices, and subnotebooks. I don't even think they have a dedicated MP3 player. If they do, then their marketing must suck because I haven't heard a word about it and all anyone talks about is the iPod.

So when they say they're going to try again, they really mean they're going to make their first real attempt to compete with the iPod. At least companies like iRiver, Dell, and Creative Labs have made attempts to compete with the iPod. They weren't very impressive attempts, but at least they had similar prices and features. Sony hasn't even entered the arena.

Desperation works for getting laid ? I thought it was the opposite. Chicks don't want some desperate looking fool, they want somebody who is confident with big balls.

I was being sa- oh nevermind. Carry on folks. Sony sucks, they admit. And I wonder what those copyright issues with the label are? Sony Music doesn't like Sony Cheap Plastic hawking other labels goodies?

Ah and we thought the whole Apple label Apple thing was bad.

have you seen the imac/versace/madonna ad thread?

ipod and apple design is becoming "Sony" in terms of the "sexy" quality of electronic coolness. i think music and music functionality is only part of the reason why people buy an ipod. one of the main reasons IMO is because IT IS an iPod.

if Sony loses that crown... all they have left is an expensive iPod competitor.
